If Murts is out, who does SSC pick at right back?

Halford, DLC or Gunnarsson?

Personally I'd go for Gunn and have Halford on the bench with Kitson, Oster, A Fed & DLC as Gunn could move to CB if needed

Give Halford 20-30 mins in midfield which is where I expect him to play next season. Gunnarsson was awesome at RB before and deserves a start as he has been in great form.

gunnarson playing with halford on the bench

whilst halford has been impressive in the reserve games gunnarson is proven and with europe on the cards, and with the respective league positions you can't afford to take the gamble.

i'd say put halford on with 20/30 minutes to play and see what happens.

With a squad that now contains four right backs, two of whom are fit, playing Gunnarsson out of position there would be silly. We just don't need him to fill in anymore. He didn't exactly have the best of games against Portsmouth at Fratton Park in that position either.

I'd like to see Halford be given his chance should Murts not make it, but would also be more than happy with De La Cruz filling in.

Gunnarsson has been rinsed at right back before, he doesn't have the pace. DLC would be my immediate choice if fit, with Halford second

The OS Greg Halford could make his Royals debut this weekend, according to boss Steve Coppell.

Graeme Murty picked up an injury in training on Monday, and Halford will battle it out with Ulises De La Cruz & Brynjar Gunnarsson for the right back role if the skipper does not make it.

Coppell said, "We don't know about Murts yet, it's just a case of waiting. We'll give him as long as possible to be fit.

"Greg is in contention if Murts doesn't make it, but right back is probably the healthiest position I have got.

"In terms of numbers and personnel I can go one of a variety of ways.

"The team that's fair on everyone might not necessarily be the team I select."

He continued, "I'm sure Greg is desperate to make his debut but when he signed I said he wasn't a 14-game signing, he was a three or four-year prospect.

"We defend in a certain way and it is hard just to drop in there.

"You need to do the groundwork to become part if the group and he is obviously getting very close to that point.

"He was bought to play, not sit on the sidelines but sometimes you have got to be patient."

gunnarson played at right back at fratton park and was probably one of his worst games as a right back

Halford. Has a long future ahead and is likely to be a regular at some point (although likely to be CM or RM). It will take a monumental f*ck up for us to be relegated this season so why not try him at LB now rather than the start of next season?

Exactly right on Gunnarsson not being the answer. He did ok against West Ham because he wasn't really asked to defend but on the other occassions he's played there we've looked uncomfortable with him defending.

I'd like to see Halford selected above DLC though. Apart from the fact that I don't see DLC as anygood now would be a good time to start to introduce Halford into the setup and the fact he was so highly sortafter in January should give an indication of his ability in comparison the free transfer DLC (obviously age/potential etc makes an impact too).

This latest quote from Coppell does make me think he considers him as primarily a right back.

DLC for me, with Halford on the bench.

Halford's look good forthe reserves, but as we've seen before this season, slotting it in to our back five is easier said than done.

I agree. DLC to start with Halford on the bench.

DLC has done enough to prove that he can provide capable cover for Murts. Halford has long future ahead but is still an unknown quantity at Premiership level.

I would like to see Halford racking up some sub appearances before the end of the season though - just so that we can see we haven't wasted loads of dosh!

DLC can be a bit too attacking, sometimes he races out on the counter attack and leaves us with a gaping hole back there...

Halford should play without a shadow of a doubt if Murts isn't fully fit. Anyone stating otherwise is absolutely barmy.

Sorry.... I meant RB.

Being stuck in an office with a number of Chelsea fans Ive been discussing / arguing about LB's for a month or so now. I mean... to say Wayne Bridge is the most consistent performing English LB this season is a joke!

Count me as barmy then along with Sir Steve who will play DLC at right back if Murt's is not fit.

Please explain as to why we are both barmy!!
