Half our points...

...have come from just 4 teams!! Emphasizes the importance to getting the most from weaker teams...

Which is why we want the dumpest teams possible to come up from the Championship, those three sides have 18 points that we could take off them...

Pity that, almost by definition, the teams that come up from the championship will be the least "dumpest" of the 24 on offer ...

However, the word "dumpest" is kind of catchy!

Give Luton an honorary place in the Premiership. They did vote for it after all, even if they did get relegated the season before it came into existance and have never played in it.

West Ham to go down then as I feel they will improve next season unlike Sheff Utd.

I think Charlton might escape which realistically leaves one of Fulham, Wigan and Sheffield Utd.

Of the teams in the Championship I think Sunderland will be the one to stay up, although I'm yet to be convinced the Cult of Keane isn't being kept afloat by a blank cheque book.

Birmingham look dreadfully inconsistant and Bruce can always be relied upon to oxf*rd things up.

Derby, Preston, West Brom, Southampton, Wolves simply don't look good enough.

There is scope for us to consolidate fairly comfortably next season (somewhere around 13th) but we need to invest across the whole squad.

I don't really fancy another awayday to Watford or West Ham. Was quite impressed with Charlton and Fulham so I hope they stay up. Wigan had a nice prematch away fans lounge as well as decent pies, so I think the Blades should go.

Surely 13th next season wouldn't be consolidation, it would be a step backwards.

With the right new faces there should be no reason not to be top 10 again next season, 3 or 4 new players would be fine as long as they are the right players.

wow. I still can't believe we got more than 10% of our goals last season against Cardiff, but that is pretty mental too.

Looking back there were plenty of games where we could feel slightly miffed or agrieved about as well.

Look at the history. Most clubs who survive the first year perform far less well in the second. West Ham, Ipswich, Wigan... all did really well like us and then got relegated/flirted with relegation.

Add to that our recent promotion history:

94/95 - 2nd
95/96 - 19th
02/03 - 4th
03/04 - 9th

06/07 - 8thish
07/08 - ? my money would be 12th -15th

Heard an interview with Colin yesterday and he implied that there was going to be some big investment coming into SU for next season.

Saying that Colin's track record is not very good with money at his disposal! (Badbuy et al).

Are you sure ?
Man City, Fulham, Middlesboro all got promoted and survived the dreaded second season....
I've not checked it out but I think the real stat is that MOST promoted teams get relegated in their first season. Some then get relegate din their second and some stay for longer. I would think the number who survive for 2 years and the number who stay for 2 + is about equal.

I'd be interested to see the circumstance of the teams you listed staying up. I'd be surprised that any who finished top half first season did as well in the second.

I'm not saying we'll get relegated but I think consolidating at around 12-15th is good and allows a platform to build on. Whereas top 10 two seasons running would seem over optimistic.

I was thinking about this yesterday; of the bottom 6 teams in the league, we have taken 26 out of 33 points (with one game still to play - Watford at home). These wins have been far more important than picking up a point at home to Man Utd or away at Chelsea.

The stats show that, roughly, since the beginning of the Premiership 50% of promoted clubs stay up, and 50% go back down (at the end of their first season).

Bearing in mind how strong Sheff Utd were last season (take us out of the equation and they were miles ahead of everybody else) the fact that they are still in the relegation mix shows how tough that first season is.

As for the 2nd season....I suspect that this is another media invention and a bit of an urban myth! Remove a few high visibility 2nd season relegations (Ipswich, Bradford and this season West Ham) and I think you will find that the incidence of promoted teams surviving their 2nd season is pretty good.

I suspect that Sunderland will be ok next season (they seem to have sorted themselves both on and off the pitch), but that all the other likely promotion clubs will be far weaker than the 3 that came up last season - even Watford (who if Marlon King hadn't been seriously injured would have put up a much better fight than they have done).

In other words, there is likely (not definate, but likely) to be just one relegation spot to avoid.
