2008/2009 doom and gloom

by Focher » 20 Jun 2008 15:49

With the Little transfer triggering the 'lack of ambition' quotes, 'going backwards' etc etc, i must add that before the 2005/2006 season, extremely similar comments were being made.

Maybe not 106 points, but im extremely confident. 8)

The transfer activities post Bolton playoff final defeat also prompted extremely similar comments.

I don't recall 2004/05 ending in quite as distrous manner as the other two seasons!

The circumstances leading into 2008/09 surely more closely resemble those leading into 1995/6 and I fear we may see similar things happening. Back in 1995/6 the players had missed out on the PL and the rewards it offered and the best were sold/jumped ship. This time the playes have lost the PL status and seen their wages cut by 40%. The club are on record as saying that some will have to be sold if the manager wants any new signings. Now we have the first class (albeit injured for most of last season) player turn down the offer of a new contract and jump ship for PL football and the riches it brings.

I really think the club need to forget the idea of insisting on getting money into the bank from the sale of players before allowing Steve Coppell to sign some badly needed new blood. They need to fully support him and enable him to make some quality signings as quickly as possible. That way, the remaining players will see quite clearly that the club genuinely has real ambition for an immediate return to the PL and is prepared to take the measures needed to achieve it. If the players that remain don't feel confident that this is the case, then they are even more likely to be tempted to move elsewhere. Similarly, potential new signings are likely to be more reluctant to join.

So do a lot of people, but that still doesn't make it true. Because it isn't.

When and where? I've looked and I can't see it on the OS or on NewsNow. They said they have to buy and sell, and cut the cloth etc, but never said no buying until the selling was done. In fact a week ago SC said he was under no pressure to sell.

If anyone can post the relevant quote....
