Burnley - strengths and weaknesses

by Arch » 04 May 2009 17:04

Personally, I haven't a clue. But I'd like to hear some (sensible) analysis of the upcoming opposition.

Superb form and desire to win - for many of their players this is an unexpected tilt at "the big time" and so they'll be going for it with everything they've got.

I could have told you that! What about individual players, formation, etc

They've played 58 games this season - which may or may not be a factor.

Two words - Chris Eagles. Eagles is going to make Liam look a little silly unless Rosenior picks up his form. Robbie Blake an under-rated and very consistent player at this level, and imho in Brian Jensen, they have the best keeper in the division.

I'd agree with that completely.
Also McCann in midfield provides a very good goal threat...especially in the air.

Does Liam need any help looking silly?

Major weakness must surely be the defence ... they have let in 60 league goals this season ... afterall we do need all the help we can get ...

Brian Jensen is ranked third-best keeper in the league after Preston's Lonergan and Birmingham's Taylor, 12th-best player overall

Graham Alexander is rated the best defender in the league, 7th best player in the league

Wade Elliot is rated as the fifth-best midfielder in the league, twentieth player overall

Paterson is rated fourth-best striker in the league, eight-best player overall

07th Alexander
08th Paterson
12th Jensen
20th Elliot
27th Eagles
41st Robbie Blake
58th Steve Caldwell
70th Clarke Carlisle
89th Chris McCann

9 players in the top 89. That's the most of any club. They are VERY classy

They had FOUR players in the Championship Tem of the Month for March.

"Burnley kept their play-off campaign on track in March with just one defeat, and that shows with defenders Clarke Carlisle and Steven Caldwell, along with winger Wade Elliott all making the month’s top 10. Elliott is the highest of those players in the overall rankings, but with team-mates Brian Jensen, Graham Alexander and Martin Paterson all above them in the pecking order, the Clarets` strength in depth is clearly serving them well this campaign."

Robbie Blake is an excellent player. I wish we weren't playing them as I want them to be in the premier league next season. Strange how things turn out in a way...

Sorry, but to me that's the crux of everything. We have the ability to be the best team in the Championship - the fact that we're not in terms of league position shows that we've not got the desire or mental strength for it.

Player for player Burnley are nowhere near as good as us - but they will want it far more than we have shown we want it recently.

OK, but I was hoping for insight as to how they play, who their strong players are and where their weaknesses might lie. For example, why do you think that player for player they're nowhere near as good as us?

This season's team seem to love the big occasion matches and did fantastically well in the knock out competitions.

Agree. Eagles has been really impressive for them this season. Class act at this level and works really hard for the team.
Jensen looks like he enjoys his pasties but he has done well this season.

Owen Coyle - Breath of fresh air to the Championship, superb appointment and genuinally seems like a likable football chap

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/paulfletcher/2009/04/how_owen_coyle_got_burnley_smi.html#079538

"The Beast" Brian Jensen has had an exceptional season, confirming the Number 1 spot from Peruvivan International Diego Penny.

As for Turf Moor, it's a decent enough ground, having seen 2 of the 4 stands redeveloped within the last 15 years maybe, good home crowd expected.

Major strength for me is Robbie Blake who was the difference between the sides at their place and is capable of doing something out of nothing (as opposed to Shunt who does nothing out of something).

Other than that I think they are fairly similar to us if a little less direct and need to get their passing and moving rhythm or they look vulnerable. More telling difference is they will be going into these games with confidence whereas we know if we don't get a result away then we're f*cked.

personally I think Burnley are the most in form out of the four contenders for the play-off spot. Preston with beat Sheffield Utd and I think Burnley will beat us; we migth end up drawing at their place but I fear for the home game - I just hope the club get in a hytpnotherapist or something to persuade the team that they really want to win the match. The last few home matches and especially yesterdays I saw a total lack of desire. How many times do the wingers have to discover that once again there is no support in the box. Kitson can be good on the odd occassion and he has the strength (unlike Kebe) but when it comes to pace, forget it.
