ONLY ONE SIR JOHN MADEJSKI!

by shoey » 23 Aug 2009 19:30

Please read below, remember what he has done, where he has taken us too, and get perspective on him!

John Madejski became chairman of the Football League club Reading F.C. in 1990, and has given his name to the club's Madejski Stadium, built in 1998 with £25 million largely contributed by him. He plucked Reading from the jaws of the receivers, and now owns 98 per cent of the club he rescued. He said "When Robert Maxwell was alive I offered him five pounds a share. When he fell off his boat I got them for 10p. Funny old life isn't it?". In 2006 he led the Royals to the top tier of English football for the first time in their 135-year history, and has since proposed plans for an expansion of the stadium to 38,000 seats. Having guided Reading to the Premier League Madejski is ready to sell up, so long as the offer is a good one, saying:
“ The brand is getting stronger all the time and if there is a billionaire who wants a nice accessory down the M4 then come and talk to me. Apart from Manchester United, unless you've got a sugar daddy with really deep pockets, you're wasting your time. ”

Madejski has since added that Reading's next owner will have to be super-yacht rich. "I'll listen to sensible offers - but from billionaires only. Millionaires need not apply."

The club achieved pre-tax profits of £6.6m during the tax year ending in June 2007 and the club has recently been valued at £100 million[5].

Soo,

Man saves club from being no more and joining up with oxford to make a thames valley team.
Man bankrolls this club, build new stadium, takes reading to the prem, takes the club higher than its ever been before.
Man doesn't want to have the club in a poor position again, and has good financial control, he doesn't want us to be broke.
Man has sold players and brought money in, but is planning maybe for when we have no more prem payments, and at that point can still afford players.
Thank you Sir John, I WILL NEVER FORGET WHAT YOU ON YOUR OWN HAVE DONE FOR MY TEAM.

Hang on a minute. The proposed Thames Valley Royals merger was back in 1983. Whats that got to do with Madejski?

Yes, we all look to the past and the brilliant things he's done for this club but i prefer to look forward and don't want to see this club go backwards in the league tables.

You lost me right here!!

Can't fault what he has done. We'll always be indebted to him, but for over 2 years now, this being the third season, he has been taking us backwards because he simple isn't interested any longer. He wants to sell. He wants to make what money he can out of the club, repaying some debts to him and then hopefully flog the club.

You cannot cling to the past. He is taking us backwards at an alarming rate!

Well Newcastle is apparently valued at less than £100m, and Reading has even less assets, smaller stadium, a lesser training facility as well. We can't be worth more than £50m.

He should move on. He has served the club well. However, I think a big banner across the East Stand saying "Where's the money gone?" might be fun.

It was Roger Smee who saved us from the Maxwell Thames Valley Royals and seems to be the forgotten hero. Much as I admire what Roy Tranter did and am grateful that when Roger Smee ran out of money JM came to the rescue if it had not been for Roger it would have been a done deal by the time JM came on the scene. The only reason why Maxwell still had shares at the time of his death was that having been thwarted in his merger attempt by Smee and Tranter he obstinately refused to sell his shares in the club despite the fact that technically he was in breach of Football League rules.

JM is a businessman who saw the club as an investment which he is now seeking to cash in. Nothing wrong in that but please dont laud him as some sort of folk hero. Its offensive to those of us who lived through it and know what happened.

Absolutely. Madejski had nothing to do with saving the club from merging with Oxford.

The first bit is very true. However, I recall hearing that SJM was extremely pissed off with Smee because he had been led to believe that the club would fold if he didn't take over as there were no other interested parties. SJM fell hook, line and sinker. Looks like our wonderful benefactor is taking back what he has loaned to us. He does not like football and never has.

whether or not he has invested the quoted amount out of his own pocket is largely debatable. He may well have done brilliantly to secure that kind of money, but its funny how we had to pay back these mysterious bank loans soon after we got the stadium.

To be fair I don't think the guy is trying to make out JM to be some sort of folk hero, nor is he trying to insult anyone's intelligence. He's merely putting the arguments we've heard into context. With my angry hat on yesterday I was hoping someone, anyone with some money, would come in and take over the club.

To be fair to JM he's probably had some of those offers... and turned them down. He's no Mike Ashley and won't sell unless he's confident its in the future interests of the club. And yes, that means the right price as he's a businessman, but you can be sure it won't be to Tom, Dick or Glazer.

Don't blame JM for the Smith transfer debacle - it's Nigel Howe, Ian Wood-Smith and Nicky Hammond you should be aiming your abuse at.

I'm still p*ssed off at everything, but that's because I'm a typical football fan in need of instant gratification. Just like everyone else on this forum.

And why's that? John Madejski supposedly ended our interest in Smith. John Madejski sets the financial restrictions.
