NO TO GAM£ 39 Protest Banner

by Forbury Lion » 25 Feb 2008 13:15

Was the NO TO GAM£ 39 protest banner that followed the blue and white sheet officially the work of STAR? (It certainly looked that way)

How did that go down with the club and has it soured relations with STAR, considering John Madejski was behind the plan?

Whether it was or not STAR is entitled to have a different view and express it. Vritually every fans groupin the land is against the idea.

Usually the criticism is that STAR agree too much with the club!

Did the protest banner or balloons receive any written or TV press coverage?

I Sky+'d the game but pressed the yellow button as soon as I got home. Haven't had the stomach to watch MOTD2 yet.

That Friday Feeling Did the protest banner or balloons receive any written or TV press coverage?

What do you think? Of course it was only because the programme was coming from Wembley for the Carling Cup final and nothing to do with any protests

Have to say I was a bit dissapointed by the protest. I was expecting a bit more effort. I also thought black baloons was a big mistake. Blue and white ones with the same message would have been much better.Make it individual to us and help to support the team at the same time. I got several people saying the same to me as well.

Tbh I'm also a little dissapointed theres been no thank you to the helpers either. I spent an hour in a pretty thankless job giving out ballons to people in the south stand on my own. Just given a bag of 150 and left to my own devices. I gave them all out, so plenty were in the south stand. It was hard work getting people to take them too. Even kids.

The message has seeped out to a few more people, but thats about it. The Banner was pretty good though!

For the record, STAR is, of course, extremely grateful to the people who gave their time to help out on Sunday, and Ian has been thanked personally via PM.

The reason for choosing black balloons was that no PL team plays in black, so that all clubs can use this same idea in their protests - that will help to have a common theme across all the protests.

Were they aware of the protest and do you think it might cause them to crack down on banners in future such as the large blue and white number 13 that gets carried accross the stand for fear that other less agreeable banners get walked around at the same time?

The simple answers to those questions are "No" and "No". We had a very open and honest discussion of the issues surrounding Game 39 at this morning's RFC Senior Management meeting, and I think everyone understands the other side's point of view better.

Surley we can support a 39th Game - as long as it's against Derby and we're the only ones who get to play an extra game. Although I'm not even sure that would help.....

wouldn't Derby have an extra game too??? They would probably beat us twice, relegating us and saving them.

I thought black was very apt. It is the colour most associated with death and this proposal could lead to the death of the game. Just disappointed that we didn't see any balloons being given out when we arrived.

As for the club trying to crack down on such protests, surely even they wouldn't be that stupid, it would only lead to even more. If all the security at the Houses of Parliament can't prevent very effective, high profile and embarrassing protests against the powers that be, you can be damn sure the comparative amateurs at the Mad Stad won't be able to!
