Clyde1998 From the Couhig Q&A:
12. Are there any plans to bring Safe standing to the SCL?

Following a discussion with other Staff members earlier today, the topic of safe standing was brought up. Rob said it will be explored and looked at. It’s not just the 1871 area of the ground that could see the introduction of safe standing; all areas of the ground will be looked at. In addition to safe standing, the club is also looking at ways it can improve access for disabled supporters throughout the ground.

14. What are the plans surrounding Stadium upgrades?

Couhig said that it was embarrassing that the seats aren't painted and that the club are looking into sorting the issue. The seats are one of many things that the club are looking to upgrade, with the bathrooms, CCTV and wifi improvements all being worked on. Throughout the week, the stadium is used for smaller events, but for a lot of the year, the stadium is empty, and Rob says that the club are looking at ways they can use the ground throughout the year. An interview process has begun in regards to people taking over the operation of the stadium with the plan to bring events to maximise the space more often. When pushed on a date for an announcement he said an announcement will be made this season.

Surely the majority of seats are plastic therefore don't need painting (that would be a poor short-term solution as the paint is unlikely to adhere well and would scrape/scuff off). Instead they need renovating. I believe the two main techniques are 'Flame polishing' and 'Restoration Sealant'.

Yeah I've seen a video of the top layer of plastic getting burned off, revealing a bright colour beneath. Or whatever the scientific process is. I am sure our seats are capable of that.

I think they need to get the safe standing rails sorted sooner rather than later. I can see it becoming a requirement fairly soon so I am sure there's lots of deals to be had to make it economically viable.

The other element of the stadium I think needs upgrading, although it'd be at the expense of seats, is the benches. They're just not big enough anymore, with the increased subs and staff every club has. That's a complicated task though so I can't imagine it'll be anywhere near the top of the priorities list.

From what I remember when I looked at this many years ago, the big problem is the gradient of the stands, which isn't particularly conducive to rail seating. So it's not just a case of bolting the rails on, there may be something more structural required.

He did say he didn't know the difference between safe standing, seats with a rail across or any other standing solution and would need to understand what we're allowed to do under the current regulations before coming to a decision. The fact he said it had been brought up that morning means it would only be at a very preliminary stage in his thoughts and he'd have no idea on the specifics.

I imagine 'painting' is a more illustrative rather than technical term for what he's talking about - in much the same way road markings don't use paint, they use some sort of plastic. Probably taking a layer off the seats to reveal a brighter colour underneath is what would happen; although that would make the seat more brittle due to there being less plastic left. May end up being the case of all the seats simply being replaced.

Interesting - I didn't even think of that. Perhaps it's a little more tricky that first thought then. On the plus side, if there's a delay it means he can use some of the money for more fireworks.

Should indulge in a bit of shithousery and only upgrade the home benches.

From what I've seen, we should get a couple of 'burns' in before the seats would need replacing - so a good few years by which time we will hopefully be in a higher league and better financial situation.

If he likes setting things on fire, flame polishing the seats would get my vote over fireworks when it comes to expenditure. Would also be a better look if they want to market the stadium for other uses.
