Vocal support has been ruined by, over the top stewarding, all seater stadium and acustics! South bank used to be as loud as any terrace in the country (slight exaggeration but we held our own) Bristol City away last season, Peterborough away a few years ago all prove we do have vocal support. The madjeski stadium just dosent seem to work acustically unless the drum is beating (i hate the drum) and there is a rhythm, people sing and different speeds making songs break down.

heard many a unkind word about Reading fans over the years - however I took a friend (arsenal fan) to the burnley game who commented that our fans were much more attractive than arsenal ones and apparently louder that ones ones she sits next too
maybe we shouldnt be so hard on ourselves?!

Tbf, the away support is decent. We like to make ourselves heard.

It's just at home where the noise is lacking. It was decent on Saturday, but for a normal league game, only Y25/26 make any noise.

Pridders Ok I am a Reading fan, well a plastic one really and I don't mind that. I was a season ticket holder for 05/06 and 07/08 but now quite frankly I have better things to do at weekends. Something I noticed though when going to the games and have always noticed when seeing footage on tv etc... Reading fans they are just...well... dull... They either look like geeky students or over weight, real ale swelling bearded old men. You never get that passion like you see with Liverpool, United, Spurs, Chelski or big clubs like Newcastle. Those fans just seem "more up for it" you can see it in their eyes. I would love to follow a big 4 club to be part of that passion and belief, I just cant though as I follow Reading and always will, just wish it had the same energy as some other clubs.

A lot of that is true apart from the top four rubbish. The likes of millwall, leeds, cardiff, west ham, sheffield clubs are all fans who make a lot of noise amongst a host of other clubs. Liverpool get given this big appraisal for their support but its actually poor unless they are playing a club bigger than themselves or a European game, same with united or chelsea and tottenham in some respects. Can't agree with that at all.
Reading have a poor vocal support and a really small away following, you can tell the town doesn't have much footballing tradition and its pretty much admitted and commonly accepted on here.

When you see footage of for example Spurs or West Ham, often shots of the crowd show almost purely white, young males dressed in shall we say "casuals" uniform.

Stone island fred perry etc.

They tend to be probably more loud / provocative than what we get at Reading which other than Y25/Y26 is a crowd with a fairly big mix of women children and the older fan.

I'm not passing judgement, but i'm just saying clubs such as Spurs West Ham leeds Millwall Stoke Chelsea have a different clientele.

I live currently in Holloway Road and so can see all the Gooner's walking up to the ground, there fan base as far as i can tell is largely a similar mixture to ours thanks to their success and the glory hunter families that attracts.

Can't speak for Man U + Liverpool but i wouldnt be surprised if it was the same, althought Liverpool's smaller ground probably means there are less families more young males.

I do think if everyone who wanted to sing just got off their behind and went and sat in Y26 (there are spaces these days!) then you'd get a big noise. The louder it is the more ppl join in its like the opposite of a vicious circle.

FiNeRaIn Reading fans aren't working class, which is why. Millwall, cardiff, man utd( away fans), leeds, etc all hail from working class city's with traditional working class support. The working class are more passionate about their football than the middle to upper class who try and bring logic to the game. " Im here to be entertained" attitude bla bla. They aren't passionate about their area or community so aren't vocal about it, simple. I'd be prepared to say a lot of readings support probably don't have family roots in the area.

I went to sheffield to stay with a few mates and they are either utd or wednesday, one or the other and the culture is football every saturday win or lose. There isn't that culture in Reading, lots of people half heartedly support a prem club and go shopping in the oracle.

No tradition in reading for the footballing culture. Not worth moaning about, thats just how it is.

Shame as reckon we have alot of passionate fans who have supported the teams for years and were brought up in Reading - perhaps they are outnumbered but those which arent. We do seem alot more vocal at away games. Thought the Burnley away support was rubbish tbh

this arguement is rediculously circular and equally rubbish.

it is a constant myth of this 'huge wall of noise' that exists within grounds. I have been to many grounds and have yet to find it, even in the most fabled of clubs coughs can be heard echoing round.

this image of reading not being a footballing town is oxf*rd. its only as reading has become more soulless in the last twenty years has the club gone the same way.

we're no different to about 100 other 'prawn sandwich' clubs in the football league/ premier....

move on

The away noise isn't terrible, the numbers however are. I remember when we won the league everyone was astonished how few fans we bought away from home.

We tend to bring more to games that are closer to us and in recent years the number of clubs nearby has diminished and so has the away support. We take good numbers to Bristol, QPR, Palace but where else is within 2 hours or so? Compare that to a Sheffield United fan who has half the league within 2 hours and it's not surprising that we've got a small away following week in week out.

I'm not using that as a total excuse or trying to say that we have the 'best' fans out there but given ticket prices/petrol prices I can hardly blame fans for not wanting to go to the KC stadium or Turf Moor.
