Reading are urging SSEN to reschedule their plans to close the M4 between junctions 10 (Bracknell/Wokingham) & 11 (Theale/Reading West) between 21:00 on 18 September and 06:00 on 21 September to repair a damaged electric pylon as they say it will cause major issues for fans attending the home game with Notts County on 19th September.

SSEN say plans were put in place before the fixtures were published while Reading are urging the company to reschedule to the weekends the club are playing at Wycombe or Cambridge.

It's also the weekend all the students will be moving into accommodation, so it's going to be chaos!

Reading Football Club has held constructive discussions with Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) and National Highways regarding the planned closure of the M4 over the weekend of our home fixture against Notts County on Saturday 19 September.

The Club raised significant concerns about the timing of the closure and the impact it will have on supporters travelling to the Select Car Leasing Stadium, as well as the wider Reading community and local road network.

During our discussions, we explored whether the essential works could be moved to an alternative weekend before SSEN's required completion deadline. We have now been advised that, due to the operational arrangements already in place, this is not possible.

While we remain disappointed that the Club was not consulted before the closure was originally announced, we recognise the essential nature of the works and accept that the priority must now be to minimise the disruption they will cause.

We are therefore working constructively with SSEN, National Highways and relevant local partners to explore measures which can help supporters plan their journeys and reduce the wider impact on the local area.

Supporters attending the Notts County fixture should expect significant disruption to the road network and are strongly encouraged to plan ahead and allow additional time for their journeys.

Further detailed travel advice will be communicated ahead of the fixture as our work with SSEN and National Highways continues.

That’d work, I’m sure Nottingham plod would be able to cope with Forest and County both at home.

No reason they can’t just put the game back to the following Tuesday though, and then bill SSEN for any loss of earnings caused by lower crowds compared to a Saturday.

As it says that the work was scheduled before the fixtures were released, surely the blame (like with the Oxford games) falls squarely with the league again. Perhaps the league have found through long experience it’s just too difficult to accommodate all of the possible conflicts.

Funnily* enough I was chatting to a QPR fan in work about this - I said we're not exactly a great away day (PITA to get to, lack of pubs, transport options etc, bit soulless) and he retorted it was his favourite. An easy journey from NW London with the kids and able to park right outside the ground.

Depends what you're after ultimately.

He left the company shortly after, while that's not really relevant to the story I wanted to flesh it out a bit.
