Euros 2028

by St Pauli » 12 Nov 2025 21:10

Cardiff is hosting the opening game of 2028, 6 games overall, including a last 16 game and a quarter final.

I’m already buzzing for this tbf.

It would be cool to have one of those epic hooligan battles take place between say a load of pissed up England fans and maybe a load of Poles or something. The kind that goes down in tabloid and Europe media history as ‘one of those times when fans were awful again’. I’m thinking the recent bar is Marseille 2016, England vs Russia. If Cardiff 2028, England vs Hungary/Germany/Turkey could reach that bar or even surpass it that would be ace.

Not that I’d be fighting myself obviously but I’d love to behold and maybe do a reportage on the spectacle. Plus anything that raises the international profile of Cardiff would be good for the city.

The Final has been moved forward to a 5pm BST kick off, which makes a lot more sense than an evening game.

Same for this season's UCL final and beyond. Good news if you are a match going fan.

And for families watching at home with younger kids who couldn't stay up to watch finals starting at 8pm (or 9pm here).

Part of me does miss the UCL Final being 7:45 KO on a Tuesday night.

Marseille 2016 was a strong vibe. Rented a flat by an old harbour, just along the coast. Sea swims in the morning, wander into the old town to watch the games, went to Iceland Hungary and Poland Ukraine, the Norwegian lads who booked their holiday after they drew Iceland in the playoffs, half the country of Iceland in their On Tour shirts, England vs Slovakia  , Wales qualifying alongside, wanting to stay here, drinking all the beers, Northern Ireland fans celebrated qualifying the next day, Will Grigg literally on fire for four hours straight.

Are you in any shaky camera footage from a Russian ultra’s go pro, getting KO’d by him as he runs through the streets?

What was the vibe like from the locals regarding you as a British fan? I worked with someone who was there with his dad over the ‘weekend of violence’ or whatever the papers called it and despite the Russians appearing to be massive c/nts on film he said a lot of the locals inevitably were still laying the blame at the door of England fans lol.

No.

The only interesting thing on that front is that I was chatting about this with a previous colleague and we're both in some of each others photos, from about 4-5 years before we started working in the same place.

I've got friends in every town and village from here to Ventimiglia, I speak a dozen languages, know every local custom, I blend in, disappear, you'll never see me again.
:?

Yeah, fine.
I'm sure your Excel has it somewhere that I worked in Marseille for a bit and my French was still pretty strong in 2016. Marseille's quite a friendly place, so didn't really notice any animosity. The French police were tooled up post-England Russia. It almost kicked off after the Poland-Ukraine game but the CRS* rolled up and it rapidly quietened down.

*I worked for the CNRS. Not to be mistaken.

I've been to Ventimiglia! myself and Lady Biscuit drove to the south of France for the holiday, and for a day out thought we would drive to Italy. it was a Sunday, market was on, and the roads was absolutely rammed with lads on mopeds with ponytails beeping their horns.

In 2028, you can do the same. But in Cardiff.

In fairness the mopeds in Cardiff don’t have pony tails. I wouldn’t think mopeds would need one but the Italian lads know more about moped culture than us Brits.

How come you remove the posters name tag on quoted sections when you quote someone?

I’m not judging I’m just curious.
