That's very unlike Italian football.

Just as Declan Hill has predicted, it's the lower leagues where there are less well paid players that are susceptible to this.

There have been a few dodgy results in tiers 3 & 4 here over recent years which really could do with being looked at.

Motherwell player Steve Jennings held in betting probe

A football player with a Scottish Premier League (SPL) club has been arrested along with eight other men in a probe into betting irregularities.

Steve Jennings of Motherwell FC was arrested at his home in Glasgow. Eight others were arrested across Merseyside.

Police said they had been arrested for conspiracy to defraud.

The investigation relates to alleged betting irregularities surrounding a game between Motherwell and Hearts on 14 December 2010.

Concerns about the game were raised at the time by the Association of British Bookmakers after a number of bets from the Liverpool area were placed on there being a sending off.

Amongst those arrested are reported to be Wayne Rooney's father and uncle.

Italian arrests could be the tip of a match-fixing iceberg

http://cnnmobile.com/primary/_yacGhB-iX6sbxDF6CY

Football's latest match-fixing scandal could have implications far wider than Italy, where 17 people were arrested on Monday including former World Cup player Cristiano Doni.

Doni had already been banned until 2014 by the Italian Football Federation in the first part of the "Last Bet" investigation earlier this year.

The former Atalanta captain, whose club started this Serie A season with a six-point penalty due to his and a teammate's offenses, has now been suspected of trying to destroy evidence. Prosecutors told reporters that the arrests, which also included former players Luigi Sartor and Alessandro Zamperini plus Piacenza's Carlo Gervasoni and Spezia's Filippo Carobbio, were "a starting point in cleaning up the beautiful game that is football."

Italian football journalist Tancredi Palmeri told CNN that investigators had found links to people outside the country -- in Asia, South America and other parts of Europe. "This one can be bigger. This time investigators found a link between the single players in the team and someone abroad -- they talk about Singapore, where we know there was already some suspicion of crime connected with illegal betting," Palmeri said on Monday.

"This can also involve other leagues, not only Italian. Investigators said they will investigate Italian football because they are Italian investigators. "They know for sure there are games in Argentina and Bolivia involved, and they suspect other European leagues including German leagues and French leagues."

European football's governing body UEFA has already had to deal with betting scandals in Eastern Europe and Turkey this year. This is the latest in a series of investigations affecting Italy.

Remember when Rooney got that stupid red card for England and it was reported that his dad had a bet on it?

Do you remember the Chelsea vs Barcelona game at Stamford Bridge a few years back? Didier Drogba's outrage at the end? There was something very suspiscious about that game.

Do elaborate as I'm sure most of us will not remember the game.

I think the UEFA champions league draw that was identical to the practice draw is the most worrying. The odds of that happening are ridiculous, though not quite outside the realms of possibility because of the restricitons on who can draw who. But its still about 1 in several thousand chance - much more likely they forgot not to fix it the first time round!

You can take it a bit further and get quite worried. Aguerros last gasp winner?

The BBC league table updated on Saturday with an extra game and put us 16th... looks like we win at Stoke and Southampton lose. If Champions league games are fixed, why not the PL? Where theres money, theres corruption...

And lets face it, the big gainers from drama are Sky Sports, and their parent company isn't exactly whiter than white by reputation is it? The big games in recent years have been overly dramatic with silly scorelines, not the turgid live 0-0s you used to get...

I don't seriously think this, but perhaps its possible. It doesn't take much to nobble a ref or a goalkeeper.

I'd heard some mutterings about one of the CL qualifying matches from a couple of seasons ago, but can't be arsed to go back and look through them.

The problem in working out whether it's that one or not is that Chelsea are hardly reknowned for their level headed reactions, honesty and accuracy of claims.
