All depends on definition of 'elite'.

International footballers are by definition 'elite', but is Lampard in the class of Ronaldo, Messi, Zidane, Maradona, Pele, Cruyff ? No.

If you're going to voice your opinions about football you have to use the correct football syntax.

Indeed, he's not as good as the one's quoted.....who in case you aren't aware were not all the same type of player either ! If it helps you I'll add Beckenbaur, Banks and Carlos Alberto to the list.... He's not in that league.

Let's have it right - is any English player of the last 30-40 years REALLY an "elite international player" :?:

Surely, you're only elite if you're in the mix for silverware - you could perhaps stretch that to include individual honours though. Which would put Lampard firmly in the frame.

bit less manically box-to-box than Robson, bit less of a one-trick pony than Beckham, I don't think he suffers in comparison to either of them tbh. since I wouldn't put either of them in the 'elite international player' bracket - they were just the best we had around at the time.

Was George Best an 'elite international player' ? He was certainly one of the most gifted players ever but sadly did not have an impact at international level. I'd say he was 'world class' to use another favourite term, and Lampard would still be just a notch below that very top level.

Lampard's one of those exceptionally effective players who absolutely excel up to a certain level and in the right circumstances. But push them up a little bit in level or take them out of that comfort zone and they prove to be no more than adequate.

He's an exceptional Premier League player for Chelsea, because everything about them means he can focus on his narrow strengths. He's no more than decent (overall) for England in qualifying or finals tournaments. Partly because for England he isn't doing quite the same thing.

In comparison, Gerrard is a step down from exceptional in Premier League terms, but is better than decent for England. And that's because he's more adaptable and less of a one trick pony. Not that I'm saying Gerrard has achieved that 'elite' status. Although I think he could and perhaps should have got closer to it than he did.

When he's good, he' can be very good. He doesn't do it on a consistent basis though. He was pretty much non existent in the last game against Newcastle but cos he scored a penalty and his 100th Prem goal for Liverpool he was given MOTM. It's quite bemusing sometimes when he's given MOTM. I think WTF - he has been shite for 90 mins, but did one pass to set up a goal, then the pundits to55 themselves off over him and award MOTM when lesser household names deserve it.

In all honesty - Gerrard, due to consistency is not an exceptional player at club or international level. He's a very good player for club and average for his Country.

If he's average for his country it's amazing he's won so many gaps.....the definition of average must have changed !

At club level he's been dragging Liverpool along almost single handed for much of his career. He's not had the luxury of a string of expensive team mates to share the burden (and when he has had expensive team mates they've been less than helpful).
