Sanguine Can't help but wonder how many clubs are operating transfer policies that at least in part consider the value in signing a player simply because a rival wants him. Spurs had huge spending power in the summer - Eriksen and Holtby were both on Liverpool's list at one point, Arsenal wanted Holtby too, likewise Willian was a Liverpool target who would have been another attacking midfielder had Chelsea not come in at the last minute. Lamela was a target for City.

Eriksen is a good signing, but did they need the others? Maybe not. But at least Holtby isn't at Arsenal or Liverpool, Lamela isn't at City, and so on.

1. Did any of the clubs you mentioned ever say they wanted those players? Or are you assuming the papers actually know what players the clubs are looking at?

2. Eriksen is a good signing? Whats that based on? I mean he could be fantastic after his return from injury but there's no way to know that. he made 7 apps with 1 goal and 1 assist. Hardly enough to judge him by.

TBM
Pepe the Horseman He'll still easily get a job somewhere in Europe. Maybe straight back into work with Valencia.

He's suited to the European game as shown by how well he's done in the Europa league. He knows that style and how to best it - he unfortunately hasn't worked out the English game yet

Bet he regrets turning down Real Madrid and PSG! (Allegedly)

if the detail in there^ is to be believed (i.e it's not just a newspaper making stuff up as usual) then it could only really have come from AVB talking to them to explain what has gone on behind the scenes

5 players is a long list? I mean if you were going to bother rising to the bait you could have at least gone for 10 but 5? That's not even correcting me, its just a lazy list of players that came to your head.

Also are you measuring success by trophies or apps?
Suarez, Vertonghen, Kuyt and RVP = 4 trophies in a combined 21 seasons in the premier league
Van Nistelrooy = 3 trophies in 5 seasons is better

I would have led with Bergkamp = 7 in 11 seasons.

I was playing by your rules, Bergkamp didnt come straight from the Eredivisie. If you want a list of players who have played in both, then we could add Van Bronkhorst, Larsson, Edgar Davids, Jerzy Dudek, Arjen Robben, Van Der Sar, Stam, Zenden....

Rubbish, that Dutch league.

I was hoping you had forgotten my initial rule so I could call you on it. You win this round. And 5 players is still not a long list.

But I see no reason for you defending Sanguine. Everyone is going around calling Eriksen a great signing when nobody watched him play except in the CL or clips on youtube and I was merely pointing out how full of shit those people are. Hes injured and has had one good game. Not enough to say hes a good signing yet he could turn shit and be another Kezman. Or turn out like Ruiz. Or Alves

Never said it was a rubbish league?

Is it ok to say he is a 'good player'?

Is that allowed?

And what of what I posted needs 'defending?' It was a suggestion that maybe there's more to some clubs transfer policy than 'we need that player'.

I'm not defending him at all. I called Eriksen a good player back on page 5 of this very thread.

Thats fair enough, maybe there is. But the examples you gave were all paper talk. The managers never came out an said "I want that player" before he got bought by another team! Spaculation is what you point was predicated on

The part where I asked you questions and you didnt answer them. You both are judging him on his form for Ajax. I asked what it was and made a semi-serious joke about Eredivisie players often being poor. Look at Kezman 105 goals in 122 apps for PSV then he was shit for Chelolsea, Ruiz was hailed as a bargain in much the way people are hailing Eriksen Ruiz scored 35 goals in 65 apps for Twente and hes been less than fantastic in the Premier League.

So I am saying youve seen him play 7 times in the premier league so saying he is a good signing is completely premature.

Coupled with watching him a few times in Europe, reading about his performances online and that a number of European clubs were supposedly interested in his signature, I formed the opinion that he is a good player, and at 21/22, one who is going to continue to improve for the next few years.

You have rumbled me though. I am in fact not a full-time football scout.
