There are probably up to around football clubs in England that have a certain iconic gravitas around their their name. I'd say West Ham were one of them:

Liverpool
Manchester United
Manchester City
Arsenal
Tottenham Hotspur
Aston Villa
Everton
Chelsea
Newcastle United
Leeds United
West Ham United

Criteria for inclusion in this list I'd say is:

- long and illustrious history
- large fan base
- international name recognition

Particular tick for the latter, having spotted the Belgian branch of the WHU supporters club in the Millers Well before the game and overheard Dutch people chatting in the Upton Park tube queue after the game.

LOL @ travelling over from europe to watch your team lose to f*cking Reading

Not as much as Mick Dennis of the Express apparently.

Big Sam is right on fans

Some West Ham fans are outraged that Sam Allardyce has called them deluded. They were upset when I said it in this newspaper seven years ago.
Then, as now, they had been relegated from the top flight. Then, as now, fans believed anything short of automatic promotion was a disgrace.
They could not see that being in two successive play-off finals was substantial.
Other, equally proud clubs would have killed for that. But the club that of Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters 'deserved' better, said many.
They are also the club of Marco Boogers, Titi Camera and Florin Raducioiu.

In their 93 league seasons, 43 have been in the second tier. They have not won anything for 32 years. They do not have a God-given rigt to canter to promotion.

One word for the assumption that they do is 'delusional'. Another is arrogance"

I'm suddenly a Mick Dennis fan. 8)

WEST HAM CUM SITE

by royalsteve » 10 Apr 2012 01:21

This sort of thing is why I hate West Ham. What a biased, patronising piece of rubbish.

At least we dont live a dump called the East End of London

The only bit id agree with is that they were on top in terms of possession for 35-40 mins - but apart from their goal they did NOTHING else. So, Reading are an average team, yes, so average that we beat the clearly far superior Wet Sham 4-2 (should have been 5-2 actually as disallowed goal, ball wasnt out) and 3-0 (when all they wanted to do was perform kungfu and diving). Thats 7-2 moron. If you defend like clueless muppets, then youll get punished.

Does he think Wet Sham are a good side. Surely not. You have to EARN the right to go up. Just because you are a so called "bigger" club, whatever that means (i can safetly say we are richer btw) doesnt mean you have the right to go up.

If Wet Sham dont go up i can see their supporters becoming more and more delussional like Leeds supporters (supported by the biggest all mouth bell-ends in the league)

what makes me laugh is that they are a so called bigger club, their site has f all people on it, funny that - unless perhaps using a computer is too complicated for them, "bless them"

funny how they dont like their own medicine - they are biggest bunch of divers out, only Chelsea are worse

Sorry, but I thought the following was actually quite funny and, definitely, far funnier than most of what passes on this site as humour.

The Reading “fans” were silent, though, having seen it on the tv once they did bring a flag. I say flag, it was more the size of a beach towel and the “passing it amongst the fans” idea soon died a death. Probably of embarrassment.

West Ham Arrogance

by Friday's Legacy » 12 Apr 2012 14:22

No mention at all about Southampton, who are level on points with us, dropping any points to help West Ham.

It doesn't matter that we're the form team in the league and have been for a number of months.

I really do hope we go up with Southampton, and the arrogant West Ham owners, management, playing staff and fans suffer a miserable fate in the play-offs. It couldn't happen to a nicer club.

Money doesn't buy you success in this league!! Try building a team!!

"A team?"

Tbf I think it's more to do with the fact that they could finish above us on GD as it's very similar to theirs, where as Southampton's GD is not really catch-able, thus giving them an 'Extra' point as such

Why are you all so obsessed with West Ham? This petty-minded inferiority complex does my tree in.

They're just another team in the league. We beat them, move on. Who gives a rat's arse what they say?

And FWIW I don't see anything wrong in Gold's tweets. He's completely right to give out a positive message and if I were in West Ham's position i'd be saying/hoping/thinking exactly the same thing.

Of course Saints are catchable too but less likely on paper to slip up due to their run-in, they've got us at home, better GD etc.

I think if we lose to Southampton then big wins (3-0 or 4-0) are needed against Palace and Forest in order to boost the goal difference and increase it over West Ham's. Then if they do win their last four an we also lose to Birmingham we can hopefully still finish ahead of them.
