genome We're at the stage now where teams are spending £100m+ on players I've never heard of

You’ve never heard of Wirtz?

Nope.

He’s a 22 year old rising star of German (& world) football, plays primarily as an AM (10) or winger but does get used as one of those “new fangled false 9s” on occasion.

Seems Bayern Munich are switching attention to Bruno Fernandes for some reason :?

Meanwhile looks like Wirtz to Liverpool is a done deal as the reds have now started talking £s with Leverkusen.

Lots of money for an average player (in PL terms) - so seems about right.

He's not an average player and he's a perfect fit for the hybrid no.10 role in Amorin's system

How many people to be made redundant to support the purchase of a player with a dubious disciplinary record?

Cunha is well above average and has been brilliant for Wolves - one of the main reasons behind their turning their season around. Remains to be seen though whether he, or anyone, can thrive at United. Talented players just wilt there, for whatever reason.

Well, we'll agree to disagree - not a fan of his personally but aware that is just my opinion. If he was well above average though, then I would have expected clubs in and around the European places looking at him.

Cristiano Ronaldo's contract ending at al-Nassr next month.

Lots of speculation right now that his services have been offered to all the Club World Cup teams with the suggestion he is looking for a highly lucrative 1 month contract from one of them, to play for a team but to also to be a face of the marketing for them on a big stage.

 things you hate about modern football thread. The Club World Cup is going to become an IPL style franchise thing eventually isn't it.

TAA officially joins Real Madrid.

The clubs did a deal to get him there before the end of his current contract so that he could play in the CWC, so he has joined them for a reported fee of €10M (£8.5M)

6 year contract

Does that mean the Liverpool fans are going to stop giving him grief for leaving on a free?

Arne Slot's assistant Johnny Heitinga leaves the club to become the new Ajax boss - two years after an initial six month spell in charge there. Rumour mill in overdrive as to his replacement - noting that Steven Gerrard isn't going back to Rangers.

FSG appear to be FSG-ing the Wirtz transfer. Liverpool's offer around €100m, Leverkusen want €30m more. Various reporting that this will be worked out and the deal will go through, but Liverpool fans will be forgiven for smelling the Caicedo deal that didn't happen, and wondering if Real's apparent interest will come to anything.

€10m to get him a month early is hilariously good business for Liverpool.

Fabrizio reporting that Liverpool package for Wirtz is around €130m and deal is nearly done. That's one hell of a signing. Top five young player in the world.

The Athletic claim Real were prepared to offer €40m in January, but Liverpool didn't even entertain the offer.

Real Madrid did not just target Alexander-Arnold as a potential free transfer — they were prepared to pay €40m to sign him in January, but Liverpool did not entertain the possibility with the player also prioritising his side’s Premier League title campaign.
