Starfish
TBM
Silver Fox when Liverpool won the cup but didn't qualify for the following year

They did qualify though.........and the ruling is the holders get to defend the trophy

And didn't UEFA say that in future the team in 4th would not then win a CL spot if a team beneath them in the final league standings won the CL? Although I am much more of a fan of Arsenal than Chelsea, it would be pretty hilarious to see Wenger's face if Arsenal finished 4th ahead of Chelsea (the goal of this season, as far as I can make out) only to see Chelsea 'steal' that fourth place in next season's CL but winning this season's competition outright.

Fate and history surely suggest that it's much more likely to be Tottenham who suffer that ignominy.

TBM tbh with a performance like that, Terry should be nailed on starter for the Euros

Now with a string of one good games, and a history of England performances like a fat dad in a park, to leave the racist crook out would be more criminal than his bank balance.

Who are nevertheless amongst the best 5 or 6 central defenders in the country, and when two of those are a crocked Rio and Terry, they are near the front of the queue.

Vidic is better than all of them, and that Chelsea would rather play Sideshow Bob than an actual defender is their own problem. I’d sooner the likes of Smalling and Cahill are gaining international experience than waste another England cap on Terry.

The sarcasm doesn't really float when you are advocating a CB spot to some lame old pony from a mid-table team on the slide.

Plenty of good new feet for the shoes.

What experience will they get from being humiliated in the Euros?

As Chelsea have proved this season - shipping out the "old guard" straight away, doesn't work.

You’re normally better at this shit, TBM.

The ‘old guard’ at Chelsea haven’t proven anything this season purely on the back of the odd good result – it’s the old guard that have played shite and cost AVB his job, the likes of Mata and Sturridge have been the stand out players in the side.

Smalling and Cahill wouldn’t get ‘humilated’ at the Euros, they are both decent defenders. I’d sooner we give them tournament experience than play Terry, although I concede that’s as much because I think Terry is the biggest prick in the world as much as it is about taking a ‘Germany approach’ and blooding a young side.

If Per Mertrsacker can look good in a World Cup, Gary Cahill can manage it in the Euros.

You slate me, then you post this ^^

AVB cost himself the job - saying they lost it for him is laughable.....his tactics were all wrong, and it was plain for everyone to see.

Cahill and Smalling got humiliated against Holland last month in a friendly - when we come up against teams at the Euro's the same will happen again.

The "Germany approach" you talk about wasn't installed at a finals though, they used the qualifying games to do so......plus the fact if it wasn't for injuries then they would still have played their "old guard" in the WC2010

If Smalling and Cahill can't get games for their club side this season, against what is classed weaker opposition, then why do you believe they should be starting in an International finals?! - im not saying they're shite, and over time they will be quality (Smalling and Jones - maybe not Cahill) but you can't just throw them in to the 1st eleven and say "don't worry if Benzema tears you a new arsehole - it'll be good experience for you"

And your point about not being first-choice is disingenous – Smalling has played 31 times for United this season, and he missed a month injured early on. He is very much in the United first-team, albeit owing to the number of injuries Ferguson has had to deal with, he has played much of it at right-back (and very competently). Cahill was Bolton captain and a first-choice, and earned his England call-up with his performances for Bolton; that he hasn’t played every match for Chelsea is for them to bother about, but Terry is a decent defender, and for whatever reason Luiz is getting games.

I’m sure once we limp dismally out of the Euros with Terry and Lampard doing aimless one-twos in our own half, you’ll be straight on here TBM bemoaning the ‘same old players’ for our loss.

I probably will but it will at least give us a reason to "start again".......rather than us play the youth and then everyone slate them when we dont make it out of the group stages - which tbh, isn't good experience for them, especially with the weight of all the optimistic fans out there, on their shoulders.

Why give them another chance?

Because you can't just expect these young players to perform on the big stage, with no build up or preparation .....I dont disagree that we need to rebuild but it should have been done straight after the WC2010 - THATS when Cappello should have been sacked.

So the solution is to hand the reigns to serial failures. At least there will be no surprises.

It's not like The World Cup makes stars out of new players, and who wants to cheer on young and fresh chaps giving it their best when you can watch Lumpard kick the ball out for a throw-in 28 times a game or Terry running in quicksand while the commentators state "another uncharacteristic mistake by JT there..."

How can it be ANOTHER uncharacteristic mistake you f/cking puppet?

Whoever is picking the team needs to get the balance of youth and experience right.

There's no point sending a load of lambs to the slaughter and the best way for them to learn is to be around players that have been through major tournaments before and have seen what works and what doesn't (we've obviously got a bit more knowledge on the latter).
