I don't think he was suggesting anything like that but it was an increadibly tone deaf comment. However, it is this bloke we're talking about:

The realy funny thing about that incident which isn't shown on the gif is that after the ref blows the whistle, Souness points to a speck of mud on his sock and claims he was fouled first.

Trippier appeared to launch himself at KDB with no possibility or intention of getting the ball, with his foot at least 18” off the ground, connecting with the knee.

It may not have resulted in an actual injury but I’d call that reckless endangerment.

Regardless of differing interpretations of the “challenge” I do long for the day when professional fouls of that nature are given (what I believe is) the fitting punishment of a red card.

That said, I have rarely seen a better direct free kick than Trippier’s today. Ronaldo, eat your heart out.

After five matches, Preston are still to concede a goal. And they've only scored one. Four scoreless draws and a 1-0 win. Excitement.

Think there’s an argument for the introduction of an orange card for cases like this (10 minute sinbin), for the offences that are too strong to be a yellow but not quite enough for a red

Decent compromise I suppose, but I'd still like a red. This sort of "professionalism" needs to be stamped out.

My thoughts entirely - knee-high with studs up on a player moving past at speed. If that's not dangerous I don't know what is.

But it's a brave ref these days who has the strength of character to have courage in the decision they made and to stand by it - after all, this is a subjective one, not an objective line call like offside. No-one knows who was right or wrong out of the ref or VAR officials, so why does VAR seem to be the one that always takes precedence?

A few years down the line, we'll have refs that never make decisions in anything other than a "provisional" way...

Not a red in my book and a brilliant use of VAR. Sky Sports showing a repeated angle of high foot but angle made it far worse than it actually was. Trippier intent was not to be dangerous or injure an opponent in my opinion. Ref's team called that right in the end.
