Agree with that, I think a team finishing so far clear of 4th has earned promotion rather than face the possibility of having it all screwed up by going into a lottery with clubs that have failed by comparison. Never happen here though due to the £££££££ from the telly.
Tbf applying the same system in England this season would see the maximum of six sides involved in the playoffs in each division.
Only two instances I can find of a best-placed play-off side being ten points ahead of the next, in the last ten years, is Preston in League One in 2014-15, and prior to that West Ham in the Championship in 2011-12, when we won the league.
Broadly speaking using this system in England would normally actually increase the number of teams involved, and games required.
I think there have been a few cases where teams who have finished 3rd have lost to teams who have finished 6th in the play offs despite being like 15 points clear or 25 points clear. But they have earned the win over 2 games so can't begrudge them.
