The offence is denying a clear goal scoring opportunity and whilst the ref takes into account positioning of covering players the fact that there is one around does not automatically mean the forward did not have an opportunity to score. In this case it would probably require the defender to be likely to be able to clear the ball before the forward could shoot.

It's ironic that Courtois probably shouldn't have played in the game having been injured in the warm up. He was slow getting out for the challenge, probably because of his injury. It would be interesting to know whether the medics were the ones who cleared him to play or whether Mourinho told them just to get him out there.
Maybe the two incidents are intertwined to some extent ?
