Skyline No comments on the fact that Wolves are exactly on track to equal our record with 53 points from 23 games?

I noticed that. What were Reading on at that stage in 05/06?

It would (to me) be a masive surprise if Wolves reached 106 this season. Injuries, suspensions, cup runs(maybe) are all potential distractions in the second half of the season, plus a tendency to ease off if the title is sewn up.

Looking at leagues one and two, Leicester aside, teams are going to struggle to hit 90 based on their points after 20 matches

(as of 18/12/08)

Recent form:
Wolves 106
Reading 99
Birmingham 95

Season form:
Wolves 106
Birmingham 93
Reading 92

Possible maximum:
Wolves 122
Birmingham 116
Reading 115
...
Teams left that can reach 106:
Championship: Wolves, Brum, Reading, Burnley (109), Cardiff (106) & Preston (106)
League 1: Leicester (122), Millwall (120), MK Dons (118), Peterborough (115), Scunthorpe (115), Oldham (114), Stockport (112), Leeds (110), Tranmere (108), Huddersfield (107)
League 2: Wycombe (119), Brentford (115), Bury (113), Bradford (112), Darlington (113), Rochdale (113), Exeter (113), Shrewsbury (112), Gillingham (110), Aldersh*t (111), Dagenham & Redbridge (109)

Of all those teams, only Leicester and Millwall really worry me about breaking the record. They are both flying.

And at the same stage in 05/06 (23 games) Reading had 56 points... So 3 more than Wolves... Can they last the pace???

MiniRoyal Interesting that Wolves have already lost 4 (versus 2 all season in the record-breaking season).

Yes Wolves only drawn 2 so far, you would expect them to draw more than that in the 2nd half of the season, especially as the finishing line approaches.

I think them breaking the record is still 'on' but unlikely.

I also think the record is more likely to be broken at some point than most think. We didnt exactly smash the old record, in fact we nearly didnt break it at all. I think our run of 1 defeat in 45, or 33 unbeaten stands out more, i doubt you will see that again outside the Premiership for a long time.

Our 10 wins in a row started on 01/11/05 with a 2-0 home win v Sheffield Wednesday (game 17) and ended on 28/12/05 with a 2-0 home win v Leicester (game 26).

Only 10 games in 3 years? No wonder we got relegated again.

Apparently no one would play us, because we were too good.

According to the commentator, they're form would see them reach 105, so its all good 8)

CCC situation report at the end of 2008 (after 26 matches played)
--20 games remaining with 60 points on offer for all
--Maximum season's haul for those now on 45 points or fewer cannot exceed 105
--Only Wolves (currently on 58), RFC and Brum (on 51 each) still could match or better 106

Wolves: 58 points won, max possible 118
RFC/Brum: 51 points won, max possible 111

CCL1 with 23 games remaining for all
Leicester: 51 points won, max possible 120
MK: 49 points won, max possible 118
Millwall: 44 points won, max possible 113
P'boro: 43 points won, max possible 112
Scunny: 41 points won, max possible 110
Oldham: 41 points won, max possible 110
Stockport: 37 points won, max possible 106
Tranmere: 37 points won, max possible 106
Leeds (just fer laffs): 36 points won, max possible 105

CCL2
Wycombe: 46 points won, 23 games remaining, max possible 115
Brentford: 41 points won, 24 games remaining, max possible 113
Dag & Red: 37 points won, 24 games remaining, max possible 109
Bradford: 39 points won, 23 games remaining, max possible 108
Exeter: 36 points won, 24 games remaining, max possible 108
Rochdale: 35 points won, 24 games remaining, max possible 107
Darlo: 35 points won, 24 games remaining, max possible 107
Shots: 34 points won, 24 games remaining, max possible 106
Shrews: 37 points won, 23 games remaining, max possible 106

Draw your own conclusions as they would pertain to the fact that three teams still threaten the record in the Championship while 8 and 9 are still alive in Leagues One and Two, respectively.

This Season:

Wolves - P26 - Points 58 - GD +24
Reading - P26 - Points 51 - GD +29
Brum - P26 - Points 51 - GD +11

2005/06:

Reading - P26 - Points 65 - GD +40
Shef Utd - P26 - Points 56 - GD +24
Leeds(!) - P25 - Points 45 - GD +10

2 obvious things to note;

1. Wolves don't have as many points at this stage as we did in 05/06 (indeed - their position now is much closer to Shef Utd's was in 05/06 than ours)

2. In the 05/06 season, it was very much a 2 horse race with the leading horse pulling away; this season it is a lot tighter, and Wolves aren't pulling away from the chasing pack.

7 points at this stage of the season isn't an unsurmountable gap; in 2005/06, 20 points (which was the gap between 1st and 3rd) was. In other words, all the pundits who are stating that Wolves are certainties for promotion because of the lead they currently have are deluding themselves.

A final point re: this season; we still have Wolves, Brum and Shef Utd to come to us yet....

Watching Wolves on TV last night I think that when they are on their game they are even quicker than us.
So the two top teams rely on great pace but will that be enough if the two get promoted?
They do seem to have the one extra option that we don't have of playing long to a hold-up striker and they have two of those in Iwelumo and Sam Vokes (I still don't understand why with our loan connection with Bournemouth last season we didn't get him especially as it was known our own target man would be off).
Playing the way that we both do will the long season catch up with us both and give a chance to less frenetic sides like Burnley and Cardiff to get amongst us?

Personally I don't really care if Wolves break our record because if they do then they will have deserved to-what I would like to see us do is to bring in players to improve the team (not just the squad) now so that if we do go up although new players will be needed major changes may not be necessary.
Whereas Wolves do seem to have plansA and B IMHO we still only have A and to give Wolves a real challenge I hope Coppell manages to do what he has said in recent days and bring in at least two new players in this window.
