Hendo Because if they get sacked, 16 games into a 3 year contract, they get a massive payout?

I guessed that. The point I was making was managers like Rooney (plus others I can't think of) will have other career options. Some will also have enough money to live comfortably.

It seems a completely miserable existence moving from place-to-place, being criticised, shouted at, given very little time to do what you'd like, then getting sacked again.

Money is understandable to extend, but as others in life have learned, it really doesn't help with things like self-esteem, job satisfaction, happiness, morale, etc.

So yes, £3m payout is nice, but some of these managers are just circling the drain for 10+ years from club-to-club.

katweslowski Why anyone would want to be a football manager is beyond me. There's so many stories of managers getting like 16 games then getting sacked. It's a total gamble and rarely is to do with the talent or knowledge of the manager it seems.

It must be so difficult for a manager to move location, walk into a club for the first time, be confronted with 25 unknown players, unknown staff, unknown location and set up, and be expected in 3 days to start winning games that the previous guy couldn't do.

Similar with footballers, they have to believe they can do it otherwise they probably wouldn't be managers.

Hull City sack Ruben Selles

Took over when they were the 22nd best team in the Champ, and under him they were the 14th best team

These days, Managers rarely join a club where they know nothing about the players and the set up; indeed, many times the interview process will include presentations from the prospective manager as to how he sees ways of improving the current squad.

(Which is similar to what happens when you go for any new reasonably well paid job these days; a mate of mine was expected to produce a presentation on his first 3 months in the job, the added value he would bring to the organisation, which companies he would be targeting and who in his extensive contacts list he felt would give him a decent hearing. He didn't get the role and found out later that they started to do what he had suggested in his presentation.................................)

That sounds terrible - so he got the job, but almost on the condition that he'd have to present his worth and intentions to the senior management. Sounds like a lot of pressure. The UK Job market really is pretty ridiculous at times. I've applied for many jobs and rarely hear back - so many of them I am a really good match for, and I've spent years developing my CV, adding bits, making it sound a bit better, adding key phrases, etc. I also heard overnight about Microsoft laying of 6000 members of staff - including a senior developer who is highly respected and been there for 18 years.

I guessed that football managers would have some formal interview, but didn't realise it would be as structured as that. I did wonder if some managers would just be called up and told "hey, come and join us, you'd be great". Would be a good idea for a Netflix style documentary.

I think there was one a few years ago about footballers who were out of contract. Was really insightful as they were training on their own in parks, going to the gym, desperately trying to stay fit, doing trials, hoping for a call back from a league one or league two club. They were very good standard, but their old club just hadn't renewed their contract.

The example sounds like a Sales job to me and if that's the case then I would very much expect that sort of approach.

Very senior sales job (he just landed a role this week; £130k basic.........not for me thanks! :D )

The point about OOC players is a valid one; we - as fans - don't really think about players as "workers" per se, and when a player leaves our club due to not being offered a new contract, we rarely give it a second thought. But it is their job, and it comes with all the same stresses and worries that other workers have.

Garry Nelson did a couple of excellent books on this subject a few Years ago; Left Foot Forward and Left Foot in the Grave - well worth the read to get an insight into that side of the game.

Winston Biscuit Will Still in talks with Southampton

Wiki Still has stated that playing the Football Manager and Championship Manager video game series helped him to decide to switch focus from playing at the age of 17, and move to England to start studying to become a coach at Myerscough College in Preston, Lancashire.

Still is a fan of Premier League club West Ham United.

He is also ploughing his way through one of the chicks from Sky Sports, hence why he said he wants to move to the English league

Many thanks to TalkSport for their invaluable translation service; I'm not sure many people would have been able to work out what the fan's banner meant in English without their help...........................

"...a banner that said: "Courage Emma et Will," which translates to "Courage Emma and Will."

An intriguing appointment - clearly a good coach from his time pre-United, so will be interesting to see if he is able to move on from that spell. Likely to be a lot of movment in and out of Leverkusen this summer.

Miron Muslic leaving Plymouth (the one who saw them get better and have a chance of staying up) and is in talks to take over at Schalke. Fair play to him!
