Stamford Bridge Playing Surface Heading For the ESS Stadium

Aldershot Town can announce that Chelsea Football Club have gifted The Shots their current playing surface from Stamford Bridge and that work to lay the pitch at the ESS stadium will commence at the beginning of May.

The Blues’ Chief Executive Ron Gourlay confirmed that with a new pitch of their own arriving this summer, the arrangement would enable Chelsea Youth teams and Aldershot Town’s first team to benefit from the best possible playing surface.

Chairman Shahid Azeem expressed his delight at the gift. “Once again the Directors of Chelsea have shown incredible generosity. Many international players have graced this superb pitch and now we look forward to hosting Chelsea’s stars of the future on it at Aldershot next season.”

^^ Nice.

After last night it'll probably have "red route" markings on it as well.

You'll also need a new penalty spot.

Yeah that famous Chelsea conveyor belt of talent which hasn't produced a first team regular in 15 years or so :|

Wouldn't it be easy to just re-lay the Aldershot pitch?

I guess they don't actually have to buy the turf itself. So probably just as easy but cutting a bit of cost as well

They should just go for Astroturf - it's really good these days.

Only £22.49 per sq metre in Homebase at the moment.

It has the added advantage that the neighborhood cats don't seem to like sh1tting in it as much.

Been to the (w)Rec twice in the last week (see NL Thread) and what struck me was:-

a) how many Chelsea Hoardings there were around the pitch (forgotten their 'Kids' play there)

BUT also what was more noticeable as a devotee of matches played on 'lesser' grounds -

b) how really good the surface looked.

I wonder who they are donating their pitch to?

PS For one I'd suggest Burnham which had a distinctly rutted look to it yesterday - but I'd expect there are a fair few local Hants NL clubs who could use it, if transportable ?

...unless of course it gets mentioned in the article above that I couldn't be ar£ed to read?

this is the playing surface as was at season's end. it has now mainly gone: aldershot fans were invited to the ground, and allowed (if they wished) to take away sections of turf.

and there it is(was) nearly gone...good news is that the playing surface is being restored to its original size...one of the biggest(if not the biggest) in the land if i remember correctly.

There appears to be nothing wrong with that.

Worrying to hear Aldershot can't afford their own pitch. Sad times.

Really? I thought "aldershot fans were invited to the ground, and allowed (if they wished) to take away sections of turf."
