Sanguine The entire business is owned by a couple of very powerful families who run the "country" as one big mafia organization. One of the companies they own is Sheriff, Transnistria's only supermarket chain, and also a convenient front for trafficking.

This is were Sheriff Tiraspol comes from. The team was founded by the owners of the company (both former KGB agents, of course) who have bankrolled it as a giant money-laundering operation. They've built a huge football complex in the middle of a quiet Moldovan cow pasture.

It's literally the only modern building in the entire country. The only building of any size without Soviet mold growing on it. And it's goddamn fancy as hell. This is the building where Sheriff play opponents from Hincesti, Otaci and Orhei, whose home grounds are actual pastures.

Never let anyone tell you not to dream big, kids. There is nothing, NOTHING, that positivity, hard work, a secret nation-building KGB plot and an international gun-trafficking ring can't accomplish.

Recommend reading "Playing the Moldovans at Tennis" for some more insight on them and the rest of the teams there

Winston Biscuit 19 year old Scottish left back Aaron Hickey scored for Bologna on Tuesday night.

Just the fourth Scotsman to score in Serie A - keeping good company now alongside Graeme Souness, Joe Jordan (both Milan) and Denis Law (Torino).

Sanguine *Excellent fact that I was today years old when I learned - Wolfsburg were originally a VW workers side, picked out of those who moved to the new city when a factory was built to manufacture the VW Beetle.

I think them and Bayer Leverkusen - the other big "works" team in Germany - are exempt from the "50%+1" ownership regulations for that reason.

Eight wins on the bounce for PSG. In 18/19 they won their first 11 games, which equalled the European top-flight record.

a couple of last minute against-the-run-of-play winners (and a winner through Neymar comically throwing himself to the ground for a pen) and the general view that I have read is that they look a long way from convincing

Stolen from Quickly Kevin this morning - AC Milan winning the league in 93/94 and scoring just 36 league goals in the process

Top scorer with 11, next top scorer with 5

Scored just one more goal than relegated Udinese. Milan didn't score more than two goals in any of their 34 league games, but did it four times in 13 European Cup games, including thrashing Barca 4-0 in the final.

Inaki Williams makes it 203 consecutive league games played for Athletic Bilbao meaning he breaks the record for most consecutive games played in the Spanish top division

Surprised about that. Would have thought a keeper like casillas would have it

Just looked up his stats. In a 10 year period Casillas missed just 9 league games. That's some effort.

9 1-0 wins,
8 0-0 draws.

Must have got spooked on Halloween, away to Sampdoria. They threw away the 2 goal lead and lost 3-2.

The weirdest one for me is Perugia in 1978/79

P30 W11 D19 L0 F34 A16 Pts 41

Finished second.

They won 5 of their first 7 games.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1978%E2%80%9379_A.C._Perugia_season

It's amazing to see the effect changing from 2pts to 3pts for a win had on the number of draws (and goals scored) in Serie A.

Slightly ridiculous that Williams now holds the record as an outfield player. It's a remarkable absence of injury. He last missed a league game in April 2016.

He's regained his place in the starting XI this season, but was on the bench end of 20/21. Would be a brave manager to name his as a sub and not bring him on... Closest he has come to the streak ending was when the Bilbao boss waited until the 85th minute to bring him on against Betis in April this year.

Premier League record is held by Brad Friedel, at 310 consecutive games over eight years for Blackburn, Villa and Spurs. Lampard's 164 games is the record for an outfield player (with Matt Holland second on 115). The all-time English league record is a slightly ridiculous 375 games, by West Ham centre-half Harold Bell, in the 40s and 50s.

To finish the stat attack - and this record even more ridiculous, Wayne Bridge played 112 consecutive full 90-minute games for Southampton, the only player to have reached a century of consecutive league games without leaving the field.

There is something about Bilbao and wider Spanish Basque region that I find quite fascinating. I would be a Sociedad fan if I was out there. An old friend of mine was from San Sebastien and they always made it sound lovely.

I think Bilbao and Socieded (who recently stopped it) have a policy of only playing Basque born players and never ever buying anybody pretty much

Sociedad had for years a policy of having overseas players but not Spanish non basques

Fun fact - Athletic Bilbao fans never call their club by that name. It's called Athletic Club over there. Bilbao FC was another club, set up by British workers, that Athletic Club, set up by the Basques, were forced to merge with years ago.
