Sutekh Just wondering if it's normal this time of year for the Hellenic League to be more or less nothing but various league cup games every weekend (seems to be several different ones for some reason as well rather than just one for the leagues).

And even when you do get a Saturday with league fixtures it seems half the clubs aren't playing anywhere so really don't get the Hellenic fixtures "computer" - or is it just a couple of people deciding the league fixtures by drawing random team names out of a hat a few weeks before each game until they get everyone to have played everyone else?

...I think (quite sensibly) they seem to have set aside Jan/Feb to clear up the Challenge/Floodlit/Supplementary ( a.k.a. Losers) Cup & all the various County Level cups round here. Doubtless over the past few years they've got fed up with re-scheduling numerous League games very late in the season - somewhere like Bracknell (in the past) Woodley/Holyport or Letcombe (just some examples of grounds that drain badly) might end up with half-a-doz league games or more to cram in during April - there always seems to be a 'cliff-edge' date enforced far too early in May every year to get the fixtures finished.

The CCL and Wessex have suffered similarly over the years - often the same clubs that struggle to complete their fixtures - end up dropping out of Cup competitions etc.
Warlingham (nr Croydon) for example have endured so many issues with a number of their grounds, that I believe earlier this year they packed up altogether (had already dropped into the Surrey leagues) - having failed to come up with an adequate drainage solution at any of their locations used - they had about four.

Ironically the one league game scheduled in the Hellenic tonight [Bracknell at Ardley] is OFF .... due to a Floodlight problem !

... the Cup game at Scours (Highmoor v Woodcote SR) is OFF too by the way..... presumably that's waterlogged.

Mrs DD mum and step dad live in Warlingham 5 mins away from their last ground. It's built on a flood plain which was weird and it's pretty nice aswell. They were a decent team to watch.

They know are in something called redhill League division 1

I've noticed the fixture list is very early season heavy this year, as it seems to be at higher levels as well. Last week of the season for the HPL is 8th April.

"Winchester City 3-0 Wantage Town - 2 more for Feeney"
Feeney has turned down offers from both Weymouth and Poole, two steps up, this season and confirmed he will stay at Winch for the rest of this season, which is jolly decent of him.

Official club post
"We are absolutely delighted that Craig Feeney has politely turned down an opportunity to join two Clubs at a higher level, and committed his immediate future to Winchester City Football Club.

It is refreshing for a player to demonstrate a rare commodity in football these days - loyalty! I think that Craig recognises his recent run of good form (and goals) is partly due to the environment in which he is sharing, and the rest of the players he is playing with. Obviously Craig wants to play at a higher level, and if the right opportunity comes along we would not stand in his way. We have not given up hope of progressing, so maybe (just maybe) we can provide that platform for his undoubted talents."

Four Of Clubs North Leigh v Winchester City - Winch manager Ian Saunders - called away on short-term military service - he has enlisted former Gosport No 2 Mick Catlin to cover for 2 or 3 games.

He's actually a full time career army man. Not sure exactly what his role is. I guess in the army you are going to be called away sometimes whatever you do.

This is a big game for us - we have bugger all chance of making the play offs but North Leigh are one point behind us, with two games in hand, so it's a must-win. We won't though.

They are expecting quite a big crowd for this I believe. The parking will be awful so all the more reason to walk up there and get on the beer!

... again not many NL football matches on locally this week and as appears the norm for Jan/Feb a fair number are Cup ties -

Tonight (Monday) I popped over to Rivermoor/Scours to watch 3rd placed lodgers Woodley Utd tussle with 2nd placed Headington Amateurs. Game short on chances as defences were on top but a 1-1 draw was about right - Woodley levelled close to stoppage time.

Somewhat odd prospects for promotion in Hellenic Div One East: leaders Penn & Tylers have upgraded their playing surface but w/o approval for floodlights they will not be eligible for STEP05 - indeed their tenure at STEP06 may be limited should the FA finally get their way on grading at that level.
Headington similarly have limited chances of promotion - they have left their ground at Barton Rec nr the A40 jn on the Oxford Ring Rd and moved into a pitch adjacent to Horspath Athletics stadium nr Cowley. However they have no lights there either, so are also barred from progressing .
In 3rd place Woodley would be OK - although finishing higher would make it more certain they could go up for 17-18.
Two points separate 2nd to 7th and incuded in this, are Bicester and Rayners Lane, who would also both have the necessary grading for the Premier.
The Hellenic do have a recent preference for handing out reprieves over accepting sides who finish outside the top two in Div One - in contrast to the Spartan South Mids; who have tended to put facilities before performance when considering eligible promotees.

...elsewhere tonight Wealdstone and Whitehawk drew 0-0 in National South.

Tomorrow's (Tue) Fixtures:

National
Woking v Solihull Moors
National South
Oxford City v Bath City
SLP
Hayes & Yeading v Basingstoke @ Beaconsfield SYCOB
St Neots v Chesham
SL1C
Marlow v Kempston Rovers
SL1S&W
Mangotsfield v Winchester City
Oxford Senior Cup Q-F
Thame Rangers v North Leigh

Wednesday - nothing much at all: of our featured clubs Whitchurch Utd host Hants League side Winchester Castle in the Andover Open Cup
CCLP
CWU v SCR
Surrey Senior R4
Guildford City v RPV

Can I just say thanks for keeping us in touch with the non league scene. A great read.
I have to say without your informative reports I wouldn't have a scooby about what was going on.

Isn't there yet another league restructure in the offing? Think I heard it was planned for levels 3 & 4 and due to kick in in 2018? Anyone got any idea what proposals are on the table? I presume the report is essentially to try and address some of weird splits you can get at that level and help teams play more derbies - though isn't that what every re-org is about and it never solves anything

...started to read a long-ish trawl about this a week or so back on the NLM site - but it was far too 'hardcore anorakese' even for me  and generally rambled around as a lengthy discourse, relating to the Midlands getting a STEP03 league - or maybe at STEP02 - which might make more sense (?) - will go back and try and fathom it out and provide a summary where possible.

(Tue) NL Results:

National
Woking 2-1 Solihull Moors att 1000
National North
Alfreton 0-0 Brackley Town
National South
Oxford City 1-1 Bath City - 'The Romans' levelled in injury time

SLP
Hayes & Yeading 2-3 Basingstoke Dragons 2 up early 1st half HandY level by the break - Gater got the winner around the hour mark - Basingstoke up to mid-table but 'hosts' still stuck in bottom four - better news expected soon about their return to the SkyEx @ Yeading though.

St Neots 4-1 Chesham - poor result for the Generals but they are well off the play-off pace - strugglers St Neots on an upturn of form and pulling away from bottom three.
SL1C
Marlow 1-1 Kempston Rovers - 'Blues' still 3rd but a fair distance behind the top two - share points with a side just outside the POs
SL1S&W
Mangotsfield 3-3 Winchester City - bit of a topsy-turvy game - City led on 15' - trailed by early in 2nd half - quickly got back in front included another goal for Feeney but 'Mangoes' who are above Winch and just outside the POs nicked a point in the last 10'.

Oxford Senior Cup Q-F
Thame Rangers 1-2 North Leigh
S-F line-up as follows:

Oxford Utd v Banbury
Oxford City v Nor Lye.

...even though it's supposed to be Half Term, some &^%$ has organised the Cubs to do Badminton at Woodford Pk this evening (Wed) :x ... so my planned leisurely trundle to a NL game, a bit further away than usual for midweek, has been scuppered. I now need to drop middle-one off around 18:45 ish - might still ponder a lunatic dash down to Dorking Wanderers v Chipstead but fully expect traffic through Bracknell-Bagshot and up M3 this evening, to be royally kf£(ked - 'Smart' Motorway? - my backside with a top hat on it :P :| - so might just bury myself into the sofa, hit the few remaining Xmas present Beers and fall asleep in front of Bayern vs Arse

...my missus owes me big time for this - she's p*$$ing off to Lahnden with youngest this PM to ring Bells
