Elm Park Pasty Isn't Ian Wright one of the best examples of a late developer? Didn't he play non-league until his mid twenties? He turned out ok as far as I can recall.

Ian Wright signed pro terms with Palace when he was 21 and in his first season scored 9 goals in the second tier.

Brett Williams is 24.

I sit corrected sir! The point I was trying to make is that on paper Brett has come from non-league, played a few games out on loan in Division 2 without setting the world alight, not exactly an attractive proposition for Division 1 or Championship clubs. However, if he does go to STJ and scores a few goals, particularly one against Celtic, then his chances of getting a better loan may increase, and therefore his development opportunities.

Unless we had an injury crisis of Biblical proportions, there is absolutely no chance that Brett Williams will play for us in the PL.

He was a low cost punt that has not worked out and I for one hope he does well at SJ and manages to carve out a career at SPL or lower league levels - like Alan Bennett and a few other have after leaving RFC. Good luck to him, but the sooner he moves on permanently the better for him and us.

In future and with more money behind us, I am sure we will only take future low risk calls on younger players like Sweeney. Most will fail but the odd one will turn out to be a Shane Long or a Kevin Doyle. With so many good young players picked up by Academies at a young age, I think that apart from a rare example (like McCleary) it will become rarer and rarer for a player to make it from non league level to the top in future.

Not BW's fault at all - but I suspect that at his age when he arrived at RFC it was simply too late to make the step up to Championship level or above.

To be fair Williams did quite well in a terrible Northampton team and their fans were very impressed with him. If we were in the Championship maybe he would be a useful squad player but a standout League 2 performer isn't good enough for Prem no matter what club

Really? He struggled to get in the side and looked pretty short of the required quality when I watched him against Swindon on the box.

Not sure what those fans you refer to saw in contrast to their manager.

Well done Brett! You are healthy and able, and you have a chance to show the belief that you have in yourself. Let this be the first Goal of MANY!

......it reads as if he had a tap in following a rebound off a post for the 4th goal ?

"Williams was left with a gift of an open goal to tap into. Potential cult hero type character."

From Super J's forum. Looks like they may already like him up there.

I dont know which forum you are looking at but I just asked the guys on weareperth

How did Williams get on?

I believe he scored the 4th.

On the little that you have seen do you think he will remain at Saints or will he be returned to Reading?

and the answer was this

His touch didnt look great and he didn't show anything of real note. Realistically he couldn't miss, he tapped in Tehoue's rebound.

His fitness was clearly well behind everyone else's so maybe unfair to judge.

I suspect that Williams may be sent back as the other trialist Tehoue's looked better in most departments

peterroyal76 If he doesn't score goals in Scotland he should retire.

He'll probably score 30 for Celtic in 2 years time

I have also been informed that just before Willams scored he had an easy chance which he hit on the half volley.. The ball cleared the stand and flew over the car park.

Seems he may have an eye for goal but he left it at home..

Williams included in our youth squad for tomorrow's game so looks like the move up north is not happening.
