RUMOUR - Anthony Gardner

by KEBEISTHEGREATEST » 17 Jul 2011 17:33

Jonny Fordham has written that:
We are going to offer him a contract....http://www.getreading.co.uk/sport/footb ... r_defender

He is a 30 year old formely of Tottenham. Released by Hull City at the end of season after they brought him for £2.5 million.

Think he will be a good signing partnering Morrison at the back.

He can also play left back.

He seems to be very injury pron. Looking at his Wiki page..http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthony_Gardner it only says injury after injury including a broken ankle.

might be a bit of a risk but he was/is a good player, and on a free you'd be a fool not to look at this. ii'm not so sure about paying £9k a week though. perhaps £6k a week and a further £3k match apperance.
once again i find my self asking why did we not offer ingimarsson one more year? the club knew there was interest in Mills before we released him. we normally get the big decisions right, however this was one where i feel we got it wrong.

I hope the club is looking beyond Hull to get a new centre-back.
McShane and Gardner are thought to be not good enough for Hull so not good enough for us
We have discussed McShane already and Gardner is bigger and even more clumsy.
With only 3 weeks left till the start of the season I am disappointed that a new centre-back hasn't been signed (when players are signed in January it is often said that they can take at least 3 weeks to bed in) nor a new striker in readiness for Long's inevitable departure to a lowly Premier League club or a club with promotion on the agenda in The Championship.

I am disappointed that Carlos Cuellar is supposedly heading back to Rangers-he would surely have been within our range?

What a joke. 213 appearances in 13 years. Average 16 games a season.

Still the RTGs will wet themselves with excitement about such ambition!

What a joke outfit. Hopefully if they sign him it will be on a pay when you play basis.

What a ****.

I am all for giving someone a chance but I see him as a similar player to Sonko. Both have had injuries and both probably past thier best. As you say if he is not good enough for Hull you do wonder if he is good enough for us.

Overall comparing this season to last season - Mills/Ingi/Khiz/Pearce>>>>>>>>>>Pearce/Morrison/Gardner/Gunnarsson

His injury record puts me off but he's still a decent defender. He did well at Palace and they seem keen to bring him in on a permanent deal. It's starting to feel like we're scratching at the bottom of the barrel though and it's a bit too close to the start of the new season. If we want him then get him in next week and give him a chance of settling ready for the Millwall game.

What's the issue if he's only going to come in on loan?

That would be a tad difficult as he is not under contract.

We have to give him a permanent deal if we want him.

but then you could have said the same for any number of players we bought/took on frees from brentford.

etc etc

But the Brenford players all had a points to prove that they could play at a higher level. McShane and Gardner don't have that hunger (and I don't rate either of them).

If we are seriously looking at a CB, I hope these examples are just a smokescreen.

Going back a few years there was talk of us trying to sign him. I thought he'd be a good signing back then, but injuries have had a big impact on his career.

I thought he was very disappointing for Palace last season.

Really not sure he's the answer (except that he's probably within budget)

Just out of interest how many times did you see him play for Palace last season? They seem quite keen to sign him.

He'd be a good signing for any mid-table Championship club. Us or Palace then.

Good player IMO if we can get him fit and free of injury. Worth a punt but shouldn't be the be and end all centre back wise.....
