Rafael Carioca

Heard from a friend that this is someone we've been having a look at.

No formal bids or anything official. Apparently a defensive midfielder on loan at vasco de gama. Anyone heard similar?

Wiki says the following....

Rafael de Souza Pereira (born January 16, 1989 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), most commonly known as Rafael Carioca, is a Brazilian defensive midfielder who currently plays for Spartak Moscow.

Grêmio

Rafael came to Grêmio in 2006, as an amateur player. In 2007, he captained the Under-20 side and featured in the Sendai Cup for the Brazil Under-18 national team in the same year but was an unused substitute in the tournament. He was promoted to the first team after captaining the youth side in the Copa São Paulo de Futebol Júnior by the coach Vágner Mancini, but soon was relegated to the youth squad because of his lack of commitment in pre-season training. Before the beginning of the 2008 Brazilian Serie A, Mancini was fired and Rafael earned a new chance from the coach Celso Roth, the same coach who promoted Ronaldinho to the first team in 1998. He became the team's first-choice in the central midfield and created a strong partnership with William Magrão. Appearing as a defensive midfielder, Rafael missed just one league match and received just five yellow cards during the season.

Spartak

On November 29, it was reported that the midfielder was very close to joining Russian club Spartak Moscow. The deal is set to be around of € 4 million and must be confirmed after the season's end.

Vasco

For the season of 2010, Vasco da Gama have loaned the Brazilian midfielder from Spartak Moscow for one year. He remains under contract with the Russian club until 2013.

Personally I would just love to have a good Brazilian on our books.....

He'd be pretty useful for the sing-song after games

.... and by virtue of an incredible coincidence I've seen him play for Vasco   8) 8)

Finally mt moment to shine. Rafael is a good player, I think he is contracted to a team in Russia, however he hasn't settled there and brazilians always like to come home on a temporary basis if things aren't going brilliantly for them.

I personally would be very, very surprised if this happens, he would cost a reasonable amount and there is nothing about his style of play that suggests he would fit in the English game. Good passer, reasonable work rate (for a brazilian), but seems to struggle when he is under physical pressure from the opposition. The one player we should sign from brazil, other than neymar or Lucas moura, is romulo, who also plays for vasco.

Having said that, I would love to see it happen as some brazilians would automatically start supporting reading and it would stop them smirking whenever I tell them which team I support.

sim, gosto as cariocas!

'Carioca' has implications of being laid-back and a bit of a hippy though...
