RUMOUR - Carlton Cole

Talks are underway between the two Premier League new boys as Hammers look to bring in some cash after a summer of spending

Rouble rouser: Reading are eager to spend their Russian gajillions on Cole
Mark Thompson
Reading are preparing to move for West Ham striker Carlton Cole in what would be one of their most-expensive transfers ever.

Brian McDermott’s Royals have opened talks to land the England target man, who is available from Sam Allardyce’s club following their own summer spending spree.

The Russian-backed Premier League new boys will pay a fee rising to £5million for Cole, as well as picking up his salary – which is close to another£3m a season.

It is a major break from the policy of sensible signings in Reading’s recent past, but there is enough cash for a dip into the market that could make them fortunes if they survive in the top flight until next term, when a massive new TV deal kicks in.

Cole has had fitness problems and the fee will include staged payments, but there is a good chance that the full value will be achieved if he is a Royals regular.

The 28-year-old forward has been available for weeks as part of the Irons’ busy wheeling and dealing.

Cole was in and out of the Hammers’ promotion-winning Championship side last term.

And Reading will try and finalise a deal this weekend, ahead of the transfer window shutting.

Interesting.

Would be a good signing.

Him and Pog up front would cause any defence in this league problems.

Utter nonsense, why would we want him when we've got Roberts. Total non starter.

Fast strong and good in the air, I've always liked him. Similar style of striker that we already have though.

Would be a very good addition to the squad and probably even the starting XI, probably a load of cobblers though

TheSiege For any decent Prem striker it will be 1 goal in every 2 games!

I'll let someone else deal with this.

TheSiege Someone somewhere will give the brilliant Carlton Cole's goals to games ratio. For any totally out of Reading's price range Prem striker it will be 1 goal in every 2 games!

No, come on, give us the brilliant figures yourself!

Unless you're now suggesting we go out and buy Wayne Rooney, a striker with a 0.5 goal to game ratio in the prem is a little out our league m8.

In fact, even someone like Jermaine Defoe, who most would consider an excellent signing, only has a 1 in 3.

Sounds rather underwhelming, so probably true.
Gotta trust Brian though.

Most likely bollocks but a striker that has regularly scored 10-15 goals per season at both Prem and Championship level for £5m would be decent business.

163 (98) league appearances, with a return of 57 goals = 0.21 gpg. 1 in 5.

Mistake to look at appearances for goals. Can give a very false impression

Either look at starts or minutes played

Hunt has 2 appearances this season, so does Guthrie
but Hunt has played 26 minutes and Guthrie 180, 7 times as much.

And that striker isn't Carlton Cole.
