JOHN MENSAH wants to join Portsmouth.

Boss Harry Redknapp is planning a £5million swoop for the Rennes defender.

He would be a long-term replacement for Sol Campbell who could leave for Villarreal in the summer.

Reading are also looking at Mensah, 25, but the Ghana captain would prefer to link up with former team-mate John Utaka.

He said: “I would be happy to join him. I think it is a good place for an African player.

“In the past Reading spoke about me and I know they are still interested.

“But with Portsmouth joining the picture it has made it even more interesting. They are not the only top English clubs keen on me.”
