Last season I started a thread absolutley slating John Oster and I seem to remember that opinion was split. He put in a good performance the following week against Wolves but was a bit stop start. But he improved I commented to that effect on siad thread.

Today, however, he was outstanding. It's bizarre that last season he looked a little out of his depth but this season (though we haven't seen too much of him) he loks so comfortable and assured. Obviously born for the Premier League.

Praise (and not at all begrudging) for John Oster. Well done.

Steve Coppell presumably couldn't decide whether to play Glen Little or Seol Ki-Hyeon.... So he played both.

Now, He may have to work out how to play three right wingers!!!

tough descision for the boss now with Oster in the running for that right wing position!!

as above - last year there were alot of people slating Oster,and saying that he wouldnt be any good this year (umm isnt he one of only 3 players who have premiership experience?) but looks as if he's determined to prove them wrong!!! and good on him. always been a fan of his. ran his socks off today and what a assist for the goal. def my MOTM.

Hopefully he will get the credit that he finally deserves. keep up the good work John

I've always expected Oster to perform well in the premiership, his play last year showed glimpses of that ability. He just looked uninterested sometimes last year.

I think he just needed to find his hunger again.

Fair play to him for today, he did well and was probably man of the match. However, having proven again that he has the ability and intelligence on the ball, he needs to make sure he keeps the right mentality and builds some consistency as there were glimpses of the old Oster at Fulham last week where he tried to be too clever in the latter stages of the game and gave possession away too cheaply.

That said, he was immense today and he fully deserves to keep his place for Newcastle.

Oster had a good game, but lets not be too dramatic about it. He needs to follow up this performance and do it consistently to hold a key place in the line-up. After this game, he will get a chance. Let's hope that he can make the most of it.

My issue with Oster last season was that he was, for want of a better phrase, a bit of a a tart. Never got stuck, never really held his own. What moments of skill he did do were offset by failing to fulfil a defensicve responsibility.

But, today, he was very good.

Great cross for the goal, good industry throughout.

He certainly likes it in the Prem better! I've always been a fan of Oster but sometimes thought his final ball let him down. No complaints today though!

I feel a few team selection issues coming up in the next few weeks. Certainly not short of wide men. Now let me think, what position did Coppell used to play again?

I have always liked the quick and clever passes Oster plays around the box, which seems to be his downfall with the crowd, as the rest of the players never read them which makes him look crap.

Oster has always had ability but we have too many fans who make up they minds about certain players and can only view those players in one light.

Doyle and Shorey "Brilliant" never have bad games

Hunt and Oster "not good enough"

If we'd started any game last season with both "reserve" wingers some fans would have been suicidal............................both are now proving just how wrong those opinions were whilst making our "wafer thin" squad look anything but.

Well played Johnny Oster, I hope the East Stand cheering your name pleased you as much as it did me.

Agree with the posts so far. My man of the match running Shorey into second. I always worry when Blakey is not playing as he's our most direct player but from what I can see Oster has benefitted from being part of the Reading family (his off the pitch antics appear behind him) and most of all appears a more mature player. Spot on. Fantastic match. TF

Oh, to be in a situation where we have more quality than we have spaces in the team!

I don't remember a single pundit saying before the season, "the problem Reading are going to have is they have too many quality players and will have to leave some on the bench"

I think you've hit the nail on the head. The amazing thing about the atmosphere that Coppell and his staff have instilled is that everyone plays together and fits seamlessly into the set up. What is more they feel comfortable with this. I think that Lawrenson's assessment of Coppell as a 'shrewdy' was very apt. Gavin Peracock on score today was saying that Reading are truly a team. Long may this continue!!!

Oster did have a great game but I cursed him for spooning that great chance over the bar. Lets hope that this performance gives the confidence he needs to push Blakey more. Even after today, I'd still play Blakey (when fit) ahead of him.

This season he hasn't done himself any harm what-so-ever. The Fulham match aside, when he came off the bench and wasn't at all good, after me thinking i wasn't worried at all seeing Little come off for him. But today, the Liverpool performance (in the cup) and other matches he has come on, he has been inspirational.

I had a feeling last season, it wasn't him making bad balls, it was other players not moving enough. This season, they have sussed it out (even Doyle to an extent was caught flat footed, or not doing runs where he should have been at the start of the season; improved now though!) and he is looking a truely awesome player.

Well done Oster, long may it continue.

Exactly what my missus said to me just now.

Hopefully Lita is getting the same grow-up treatment from Coppell. He looks so hungry when he comes on that he can't be away from a start again soon.
