FA Cup Classics

by Top Flight » 24 Jan 2007 13:38

Has anyone been watching FA Cup Classics on Sky Sports?

They usually show the programme in the week running up to a Round of the FA Cup.

This week they are showing:

Liverpool Vs Chelsea
Sunderland Vs Blackburn &
Sheffield United Vs Ipswich

Sheffield United often get shown on FA Cup Classics where they show a classic FA Cup tie from years gone by. I have never seen Reading being shown in a classic FA Cup tie from years gone by.......

Have we never been involved in a Classic FA Cup clash....... Seemingly not.

The only Cup game that I can think of which was a true classic was when we beat Sunderland at Elm Park quite a few years ago with a late winner.... I think we won 2-1 or something, can't remember so well now. But neither us nor Sunderland were top flight teams.

I cannot think of an FA Cup tie that we have been involved in since the 80s which you can really call a classic.....

We really have a Sh*te cup pedigree! The Blades have been involved in quite a few Cup classics.

They also showed Peterborough 2 Newcastle 4 last night.

FWIW, our replay against West Brom last season was pretty good.

We've definitely been on there. I think they showed highlights of our win over Orient once. The game that was live on a Saturday evening.

Unsurprising unless they want to show us getting knocked out on pens by Walsall in an FA Cup cLOLassic.

Maybe thats too recent to be shown..... Give it a couple of years.

There really hasn't been any RFC cup classics.

We beat Souness Southampton 3-1......... But that was a 3rd round tie. I'm not sure you can really call that game a classic.

Wolves Vs Newcastle was a cup classic a few years back.

Reading is badly in need of some famous/classic FA Cup performances.

I remember going to that game but i can't remember the score? What happened? Why was that a classic? I'm sure we only beat them 2-1 or something didn't we in a fairly routine cup match!

I think it was 3-0, hardly a classic but I think they just used it as they had been live at the game and was a 2nd round tie.

Was that the same season where we player Birmingham and beat them 1-0 and that was also on Sky.

I think Orient was a round 2 match and Brum was a round 3 match.

That was a good game because Brum were in a higher division at the time.
That was bordering on a classic apart from the lack of goals in the game.

Same year but Brum was a Rd 1 match I think. It was the one season that a couple of teams from the 2nd tier had to enter in the 1st round, so the promoted clubs still entered. Believe it was the season we lost to Man City in Rd 3 - I could be wrong though.

Alan Partridge Unsurprising unless they want to show us getting knocked out on pens by Walsall in an FA Cup cLOLassic.

Or losing 1-2 at home to Bishops Stortford!

FA Cup classics and Reading FC do not seem to go in the same sentence really

Reading 3 Newcastle 3 was a classic match.

You might be too young for that one.

Hardly a classic in the true sense of the word.

Reading FC don't know the meaning of FA Cup classic.

Actually come to think of it..........

When Slough scored two injury time goals to peg us back from 3-1 up to 3-3 to force the replay at Elm Park, now that was a classic.....

More from Slough's perspective than ours.

But since it was a non league team playing a Div 2 team at the time, it can hardly be classified a Classic by Sky Sports interpretation of what a classic is. Which mainly involves teams from the top flight and the occassional championship side knocking out a major Prem side in a ding dong encounter. RFC haven't really had such a game for a very long time. Probably since 1927.

When we beat Hendon 4-2 and I remember Iain Dowie missing the ball completely at one point just before his £30K big money move to Luton. Could that be considered a classic?

They do FA Cup classics for every round from the 1st onwards.
