Pierre Joseph-Dubois and Curtis Ujah

by Gordon Cumming's right ho » 26 Jan 2007 15:41

What's the story on them being released? I thought both showed "great promise"....

Without letting my cynicism get in the way, is this just another example of the academy bringing players on and dumping them when they are believed not to be up to scratch?

Neither are anywhere near good enough, they'll struggle to make it a pros. Sad but it always happens.

It's what happens when the first team is so succesful, you've got to be a top player now to be kept on by Reading now we are where we are, it's pointless keeping hold of players even if they would be of League 1 or 2 standard.

Both looked ok at times, and I thought Ujah might be kept on a bit longer, but SKDD is probably right that they're just the latest in a long line of promising kids that just aren't up to league football.

Wish them luck getting another club though.

Well, its not like they are eating up wages, and if we can transfer them for £50k to a lower division squad, it is probably worth it. If we can't even do that though with them though, might as well let them roam free.

Purely racial in its motivation I suspect.

Not seen us make a cock up yet on any youngsters we've released.

Our recent success has probably played a part in the 'failure' of the Academy to produce a regular first teamer.

As we've kept progressing the standard required has kept increasing conversely we were not attractive in the early days as youngsters were may have been interested in went off to the London clubs or Portsmouth and Southampton.

Now, though, we're beginning to see some possibles start to appear in Alex Pearce, James Henry and Jem Karacan (possibly also Curtis Osano and Jon Hayes).

Before that we used to think that Alex Haddow and Phil Hadland were the best we were going to get, then Adam Lockwood, however since then Jamie Ashdown has come through and would still be here had the Premiership not come a calling when he was just about making his breakthrough. Nathan Tyson possibly would have been the other to be a regular in the squad had he stayed but he wanted 1st team football at a time when we had quite a few strikers so off he went. And Darius Henderson's playing in the Premiership at Watford of course

Neither will make it at a decent club. Pearce and Henry'll come through from the academy before long and I hope Pearce plays tomorrow instead of Sodje.

Spacey, are you accusing someone else of being xenophobic?

No, that's a fear of foreigners. Race and nationality are two entirely different things

Indeed - he was playing for the youth team which lost 1-0 to Liverpool tonight. All the same, he'll make the first team before too long.

To you maybe, but you probably thought Andy Hughes was good !

Seriously, watching the youth team is a million miles away from the first team and if club don't think they could cut it, then that's football.

I'll be prepared to bet neither player breaks into a Premiership Club first team within the next 2 or 3 years.

You'd probably be safe if you said Football League on the history of our Academy/1st Year Pro rejects.
