Does anyone feel that we are kidding ourselves re Spurs ??

by Crowthorne Royal » 04 Apr 2007 13:26

It would appear to me that even our great leader has a very different view of the Spurs game than I did (yes, I was there and didn't watch it on TV) First half I thought we were good going forward and should have been punished for an average defensive performance. However 1-0 to them at HT was about right I thought. Second half, to use a football cliche..'We huffed and we puffed' but really didn't create anything and I thought we looked poor with no end product. We were lucky not to lose 3 or 4-0. Would we then be quite so jovial as we appear to be on the website ? All the staff (Kitson today) that have been interviewed seem to think we deserved a draw!
Anyway, this is not to knock us as like 99% of fans I am delighted with our season, but we must be more self critical if we are not to finish the season on a low. With todays news that Glen Little is probably out for the season where will our attacking/creative threat come from ?
Come on RFC it's time for honesty - It's the only way to keep over achieving.

We deserved to lose by more. Spurs finishing was shocking, but we didn't create much.

Why? By all accounts, Hahnemann and Federici were outstanding to keep the ball out. Just because they had more chances than us doesn't mean we deserved to lose heavily.

That's where hopefully Seol starts to play like he did at the start of the season.

given that the penalty was dodgy at best
that they had two not given for the same , and in zakoras case much worse , offences.
given that we hit the bar etc

and given that spurs squandered alot of decent chances

perhaps a draw would have been fairer, its not that wierd a viewpoint

even though i agree that they played the better football, but much like arsenal kept fannying about and trying to pass it into the goal.

By your theory we shouldn't have scored a goal, so we would have still lost.

You are confusing public statements with private sentiment.

We lost 1-0 to a pen that probably shouldn't have been given so by that basis you could argue we deserved a draw as Spurs didn't score from open play.

I'd be more worried if the club were coming out saying we deserved to get tonked - in private I'm sure they will have looked at the game, seen what went wrong and work on it.

Did I say otherwise? Their penalty was dodgy as it is, so maybe it should have been a draw if we failed to score.

To be honest I don't think a lot went wrong, they are just a better team than us, with top quality players.

Apart from the first five minutes or so, until the goal was scored the game was nip and tuck. If anything I thought we shaded it.

Once the penalty was given and converted we were chasing the game and were left exposed as they came at us on the break and distorted the way the match was shaping up until then.

But you'd still look at areas where we didn't perform as well, regardless of the opposition. For example, our set plays were poor as was our crossing.

Weird logic !!

Given that Spur's finishing was so bad on what basis did they deserve to win by more ?

No team that fails to score a goal deserves to win a game...

Its not rot, its a football opinion which is what this site is all about. To be honest we never looked like we were going to win this game and on the balance of play and chances created (dubious penalty aside) Spurs deserved to win. More worrying for me was the form of Harper and Sidwell in midfield ( should we now give someone else a chance in midfield?) and Kitson. Kitson puts himself about a lot but I'm not sure he is achieving much at present--bring back Doyle!!

We were awful in the 2nd half. Spurs couldn't score in a brothel. It wasn't a penalty. It would have been unjust had we got anything from the match, as Spurs were clearly the better side.

So I sort of agree with the original poster..

Tilehurst Mike ...bring back Doyle!!

I hope he'll start on Saturday [up front], what are the chances?

We didn't deserve to win on Sunday but look how far we've come. Spurs have got a great squad and we've taken 3 points off them this season and given them a good run for their money on their patch. We never gave up and could have got something towards the end (if only).

it's goalkeepers role to keep all the balls out. they did it except for a dodgy penatly. you don't expect people to say, 'ignoring the guy who scored a hattrick against us, we deserved to win'?

We got what we deserved that day, and were fortunate not to get hemmered in the end. yes we did create a few decent chances, but not enough to warrent winning the game, and Spurs looked dangerous everytime they attacked.

TBH we need to realise that these games are not the ones that will decide our season and I never expected to get anything out of it in the first place. As long as we pick up points from teams such as Wigan, Fulham etc, I see playing these big teams away as a good day out.

No we're not kidding ourselves. I thought we came out of the game with great credit. Who didn't think that in the last few minutes we were still going to produce something. The fact that Spurs weren't clear and we were still in the game is a credit. If you squander a shed load of half decent chances then how do you deserve to have the goals - I'm afraid close but no cigar - that's football.

You have to accept that on the day sometimes you get beaten by the better team as in this case. But for idiots to come on here and suggest we should have been tonked is rubbish, the fact is we weren't.

What do you want SC to say?

Good post - I wish we'd played a bit better second half though. I loved Jol's smile on the interview he gave on the bbc website - he called us a teriffic team. Thought we played a full part in a very exciting game...
