A lone voice in the wilderness?

by shadesrwrf » 10 Apr 2007 08:10

Once again the ADHD brigade on here are whinging because we're not a step closer to Europe after last night's result. The concensus of opinion appears to be that European football is a must next season. I'm struggling to understand why. We'll play a couple of teams that nobody has ever heard of prior to going out to one that we've all just about heard of. In the meantime we'll waste a lot of time and energy that should have been used ensuring we make a good go of our difficult second season.

Don't get me wrong, I want to see us win every game, of course I do. BUT, we've achieved all we need to achieve this season and now is the time to try different things out, give players who've not had much chance to experience premiership football a run out and start planning for August.

Already there are those who suggest Reading have done pretty much as much as they're ever going to do. They think the best we can hope for is to settle down and become Premiership also rans. I just can't understand that mentality. Reading Football Club, handled properly, can go on to be one of the best teams in England and maybe one day Europe. However, that's not going to happen overnight and will take very careful planning.

I am beginning to think I'm the only person here who believes European football next season would be a disaster at this stage in the club's growth.

SC agrees with you, "Europe is not the Golden Chalice that a lot of clubs believe it to be".

I for one would like to see us play in Europe mainly for the jolly. :P

You most definately are not shades. European football would be a mistake for a club that needs steady growth like Reading. We have limited resources and need at least two full seasons in my opinion (all that tv money) before we can start to afford European football. In terms of players required to compete, and wages to get those players.

Agreed. I'm probably the only one here who thinks staying up next season is the priority.

We should be finishing as high as we possibly can. If that results in European football and Coppell doesn't feel we are ready, he can always treat it as he does every other cup and play the reserves.

You're not the only one. I think we'll struggle next season to be honest. We should go all out for the cup games next season too, imo.

was the same when we made the play offs when we just got promoted to what is now "the championship" . most wanted us to get promoted and have that 1 season of premiership football. I always believed we were better to consolidate and build.

Its the same now

Im sure our current Wage budget is close to most UEFA cup teams. The Championship is the 3rd most supported league!

Europe for me would be great! I am only disappointed the tidal wave is slowing down.

Just a dream I know!

For an english team to play in Europe and compete they need a lot of spare cash. Coppell has already said, he doesn't want to be in europe until he feels we can compete.

Isn't that a bit of a contradiction? We need to concentrate on staying up, so the cup games should come second. I know I'm opening myself up to abuse - said the actress to the bishop - but I already have a few worries about next season. Sorry, but I do - I think we'll do another Wigan, have a great first season then struggle the next... let's hope I'm talking rubbish.

I've asked before but haven't had a reply: could we finish as high as possible (eg a UEFA Cup place) and turn down the invitation to take part? Is it doable within football rules and, if, so would the FA then blackball us for dipping out?
