£ 200m to supplement the club

by One Beer is never enough. » 01 May 2007 09:43

Just watched the post match press conference by SSC on Reading World. He states - tongue in cheek I'm sure - that with regard to Europe, Mr Mad has £200m to supplement the squad.

Even though probably in jest, now lets see already inflated asking prices rise even higher.

I'm sure Mr Mad is watching the pennies, he has dropped down 20 odd placings in the rich list. (Still worth 50m more than last year)

http://home.skysports.com/list.aspx?hlid=464398&CPID=8&clid=108&lid=&title=Coppell+keeps+cash+in+reserve

Reading boss Steve Coppell claims he has £200million to add to his squad this summer - but still plans to field his reserves if his side claim a Uefa Cup spot.

Reading have had an outstanding first season in the Premiership, and a 1-0 win over Newcastle on Monday night saw them move up to seventh in the league.

However, Coppell believes the competition would be an unwanted distraction for the club and says he will field his reserves if they qualify, even though chairman John Madejski is ready to open his chequebook to reinforce the squad.

"I've said all along my reasons for thinking this would not be a good time for Europe, but if it happens, it happens," he said.

"The chairman has told me he's got £200m to supplement the squad - it's just a question of me going out and writing the cheques!

"As far as I'm concerned, we have a European Cup final every weekend in the Premiership. That's how much it means to everyone at this club.

"We've prioritised it massively this season - I make no bones about that - and we would prioritise it again

Surely someone has accidently added a zero to that story. Or is it the transfer budget including wages for the span of Coppell's entire contract?

Either way, it's just put the cost of the summers transfers up...

Did he just say 200 million? Maybe he meant pesos or rupees

200 million pesos = 9 million GBP
200 million rupees = 2 million GBP

We have had a legendary season , but one thing really gets my goat. If we have been tryng to avoid Europe all season then why didnt we put out stronger sides in the F A cup when we were safe from relegation ?! My only gripe of the season

erm...I think the Sky reporter deserves a whoosh.

Coppell's comments were clearly meant tongue in cheek, though I was quite surprised none of the journos seemed to laugh when he said it in his post match interview.

Maybe they don't understand sarcasm...

I think SSC is too clever for the average hack to understand his humour.

Because if we'd reached the final we would have qualified for Europe ?

Seriously how dumb are these people. You really have to be mentally retarded to think Coppell was being seriously, no doubt this will make it to the red tops by Sunday....

we haven't been trying to avoid anything. we've tried to win every game whilst giving fringe players a chance to impress and conserving the fitness of our "first" 11

Where does Steve Sidwell fit into this? Is he asking for too big a slice of the £200m or is he not on SC's list of priorities?

But what im saying is why would we need to conserve the first 11 when we are already safe ? Conserve them for what ?

It's always been about using the squad, I don;t think we have any players that we would rest. We have a good squad and Coppell has always wanted to make sure they were all involved.

I watched the post match interview twice to see if there was any indication that SSC was joking. To anyone that doesn't understand the wage structure of Reading, it certainly looked like a serious comment.

My guess is that JM is taking out a loan and it's all going to Sidwell. :D
