The Greatest RFC XI debate - Goalkeepers

by SpaceCruiser » 01 Jun 2007 12:54

Ok, to get the ball rolling in voting our greatest RFC XI, nominate the goalkeepers who have played for Reading FC over the years. I am guessing that we'll all want to see Neil "Shaka" Hislop, Steve Death and Marcus Hahnemann in the vote. That probably leaves 5 other places to fill. So, debate away and hopefully we'll have 8 nominations by the end of today and I can set up a poll for the weekend.

Go!

Obviously each 'keeper has represented us well in their respectives tenures between the posts, but given the standard of football we were playing when they were our mainstays, surely Marcus has to get the No.1 shirt.

Statistically (when it suits) Marcus was one of the top stoppers in the top flight last season - an accolade that simply cannot be given to any other RFC badge-toting 'keeper.

Steve Death served the club for many years.

He holds a clean sheet record that still stands to this day.

He was the first keeper i ever saw from behind the goal at the Tilehurst End when i was a kid.

No contest for me. Steve Death , Reading's alltime No1

I'd agree with that one since he played in the Simod Cup Final.

Gary Westwood saved a penalty against me at an Elm Park open day in the 80's - so he is obviously an amazing goalkeeper!
