Speculation - Jermain Defoe

by cmonurz » 08 Jan 2008 14:24

Told he can leave Spurs by Ramos, and unlikely to go to any of the big four, or Everton, who have plenty up front. A return to West Ham perhaps? Or Reading? Why not? Instinctive goal-scorer, quick – I think Defoe could be just the sort of partner to thrive off of Kitson, who is a Berbatov with work-rate.

Thoughts, nobbers?

If we swapped him for Lita it would be hilarious.

He'll be a great signing for anyone in the Premiership. I expect Portsmouth to bid around £8milllion + for his services. Thus leaving Reading counting the pennies and wondering what we can get for £400k?

Massive LOL for any Reading fans that thinks Defoe would even think of joining Reading.

WCBAP

As could be the fact that he wouldn't perceive us as matching his ambitions.

I understand that Barca are looking to off load Ronaldinho; what do the rest of the nobbers think about us going for him??

That showing the problem/ harsh reality of it all. Defoe is an England international but out of favour at Spurs, I'd doubt any of the top 4 will buy him. So then he's looking at Vila, Pompey, Newcastle, City, clubs like that. We are still lightyears from being able to compete with them, when if we want to be really pushing on and getting to that 'next level' that Nigel Howe talks about then a signing of the size of Defoe would be a certain way of getting there.

We could probably get him when he is 37 - ALA Les Ferdinand.

Portsmouth seems a likely destination.

LOL at idiots thinking we could actually sign him.

Ian Royal NO!

Why?

1) overrated
2) inconsistent
3) big ego
4) should we want another striker we want a big strong one, not another little nippy one, we have 4 already
5) WWBAP
6) We're not looking for a striker right now, far higher priorities.

Unless he can play in defence?
No chance.

We don't need a striker.
We can't afford him anyway.
Why would he want to come here?

He's Tottenhams 3rd choice striker too... Yea swop him for lita!!!

I think some of you have rather mocked cmonurz's post and wrongly so.
Defoe is a very good finisher but his work outside of shooting range is poor so on footballing grounds I don't think I would want him at our club.
On the grounds of somebody on the fringes of the England side signing for us why not?

One day if we remain in The Premier League we will sign somebody for £8-10million.
Bolton (the lowest spenders this season)spent very little on old International players, built up some consistency and then suddenly spent big on Anelka and quite big on Diouf. Both of those have been successes.
By contrast Reading have relied very much on building a Championship side of hard-working and energetic players that proved in the first season to be good enough to readily keep us in The Premier League.

There will come a time when we take that further step of risking £10 million or so on a proven top level player. That time might not yet have arrived but a player like Defoe shouldn't be dismissed so quickly as unaffordable-we shouldn't keep this inferiority complex that shows through so often on this board.
We are in The Premier League and without signing anybody have a fair chance of being here again next season so start getting used to it.
All we need is the club to start spending the millions that it is currently hoarding on wages and players and who knows we might even become an established Premier club.
