Royal Rother What was the "tune" they sang the thread title to...? (It's driving me mad that I can't remember!)

Same as Man U fans use for "That Boy Ronaldo".

Yes, it's the tune that every set of fans tries to sing something to these days.

Well done Fulham fans for making it amusing..!

It's Sloop John B by The Beach Boys and the same tune that Liverpool sing their "We won it five times" chant and United sing their Ronaldo chant to.

Ian Royal I would say our most successful seasons ever would be:
8th in Prem
??th in Prem
1st in Championship
2nd in Division 1 losing in the play off final
Season we won the Simod Cup - only this low becuase it was a fairly short lived cup that few have heard of and argueably wasn't taken very seriously.

Surely by your method it would be

8th Prem
XXth Prem
1st CC
4th CC
7th CC
2nd L1
3rd L1

and so on. It is impossible to quantify an official best season, if we finish in the bottom four or five then I would say this is not our second best season. I would say it was the season I expected us to have last season and indeed this one. The 8th place will probably be our best ever season in memory and the Championship season our second best, anything after that is pretty irrelevant. Whilst I appreciate the importance of the Simod Cup to a club that has basically done oxf*rd all in these type of competitions, it doesn't even rank up there in comparison to league achievement for me. Each to their own

Do the 1993/94 (1st L1) and 1994/95 (2nd CC) seasons not count then, H&P? Or are you just another splastic fffantastic?

Huntley & Palmer It is impossible to quantify an official best season,

I think the main problem is that people use the phrases "best" and "most successful" interchangeably. In league terms, this will be the second most "successful" season ever. But it won't be anywhere near the second "best". Simod Cup season and all promotion seasons were better, in my opinion. But "best" is a subjective judgment. "Successful" can be defined more clearly (although I would argue that trophy-winning seasons trump league placing when it comes to a definition of "success" for a club like ours that wins silverware so rarely).

Didn't watch any games in 93/94, not much in 94/95 either. But it highlights my point, everyone has their own 'best' season

Ian Royal
Daniella So what people are saying is this.

Reading Played 38 Won 0 Drawn 0 lost 38 Goals for 5 Goals against 103 Position in table 20th

That would equate to our "second best season ever" get a life, seriously.

Not really given we've won 8 and drawn a similar amount. So your scenario is totally irrelivant. Especially seeing as no team has ever not won a game in a season, or so I understand it.

Thaumagurist* Or even the season 1986/7 where we achieved a then highest ever placing of 13th?

I'd place the best seasons we've had in this order:

8th in the Prem (2006/7)
xxth in the Prem (2007/8)
1st in CC (2005/6)
2nd in CC (1994/5)
4th in CC (2002/3)
7th in CC (2004/5)
9th in CC (2003/4)

13th in CC (1986/7)

We all have different definitions, I think all we can agree on is that this will be:

our second best season in terms of league position;
not our second best season in terms of enjoyment/quality/entertainment etc.

I wouldn't say battling to avoid relegation from the Premiership is more successful than storming to promotion, in terms of enjoyment I would put this below the last two seasons and slightly above the two seasons before that, if only for the occasional standout results and performances.

but best season in terms of enjoyment is totally random and subjective
the only way you can judge it is best league position

my favourite, most enjoyable season was our last at elm park and we got relegated into footballing nomans land

P.S. You missed a comma from your previous sentence.
