Daniella I always chuckle at the away fans when the attendance is announced.

Pa: Todays attendance 23,146

Away fans: AHHHH, WAYYYYYYYYYYY, WHISTLES, HAND WAVING, oxf*rd SIGNS and LAUGHS.

Especially when the Blackburn's (terrible support for a one time Premier League winners), Wigan's, Birmingham's and Portsmouth's often get less.
I recall back in 1999(?) Fulham giving it the big sarcastic "wooooooooooo!!!!!!" when the crowd of just over 19,000 was announced, despite that being higher than the capacity at Craven Cottage at the time. Their fans were a right bunch of arrogant dicks for a few years, and I hope fans in the championship remind them that they used to sing "we'll never play you again" every week.

Mind you, that song has never been more cringeworthy than when a few brainless Reading lads starting singing it at Bournemouth a few years ago. Not just because it's such a tosser's song, but because we had to play the return match against Bournemouth the following month.

Indeed, followed by "We'll never play you again".....

I'll enjoy rubbing that one back in their faces as I will when we visit Derby and sing "We're only here for the Champions"

And when the crowds are announced at St James's Park and the Emirates we should respond with a round of 'My Garden Shed....'

One of the few bright points of a desperate season is that we ditched this folly.

I can't think of anything worse than watching £15-30 million of construction work starting, post relegation, on the construction of 6,000+ seats that will never be sat in and watching games in a, literally, half empty stadium again.

Thank god there are some people around with some common sense.

If only some of them lived at Schards Towers, where it appears to be obligatory to keep ones head firmly inserted several feet up your own rectum.

Having played to near full houses for most of this season (and any marginal decrease on the last campaign being largely down to a greater corporate allocation in the Upper West) what a shame that none of the money Coppell chose not to spend on his squad will be used to make our stadium fit for a swift return to the Prem.

Our lack of revenue was one of the biggest handicaps to attracting the kind of players who would have enabled us to avoid yesterdays heartache.

Having said that, whilst I have always felt that the East stand expansion should have gone ahead regardless, I've never suggested that relegation would not alter the clubs plans.

However, any expansion will involve some form of lead time including contractual commitments and no club is immune from relegation.

In fact, we were relegated the season before the Mad Stad opened and many of us sat in a less than half full stadium for several seasons until the gloryhunters started to arrive.

Did Schards stamp his feet in childish indignation back then insisting that Elm Park was "just the right size" for little Reading?

Probably

What Schards does in his own time is up to him, but he's right. What's the point in having 15000 empty seats at home games?

Bit like a couple living in a six bedroom house, they may rarely use them but it is nice to know they are there if needed

That article was written when we were still in the Prem and looking like we would probably stay up. Not sure that the thinking would be the same now. If we had stayed up, and looked good for staying up next season too then they would start work in 2009. As it is we went down, and I suspect that even if we were confirmed up by March they still wouldn't work on it in summer 2009 but wait to see if we stayed in the Prem for 2010/2011 and then start in summer 2010 (assuming we were confirmed as staying up early enough that plans could be put in place).

A hearty  at people still discussing this. RFC need a stadium expansion about as much as I need an olympic sized swimming pool and room for a pony.

Or JM needing another flash car, we only need an expansion if we want to be in the top clubs in the country, simple, no club with under 25k crowds will survive and compete at the highest level for long, unless they are bank rolled by a man with more money than sense

I think the confusion comes from the following article on the official site

At the top it says posted on 21st May 2008 so that is what a number of websites have picked up

The plans for the expansion were put on hold to see if we could stay last season
I am unsure how serious the club was about the whole idea anyway
Now we are in the mighty championship you would be a complete twat to think a stadium expansion was going to happen in the near future
The mad stad is top quality for a club in the championship
Mr madejski will be cutting just about everyhting to try and save money so making the stadium bigger is out of the question

The main question is will we be filling the stadium as it is next season?
