Get over what, exactly? It seems that McGhee has seen the error of his ways, when he left us to move to Leicester, then left Leicester to move to Wolves. He is now happy to stay at Motherwell, rather than go to a 'bigger' club, Hearts. RFC, Leicester and Motherwell all wanted him to stay because he got success (with us and Motherwell, at least) and got all three clubs to play a good style of football.

Imagine that, eh? A club wanting a successful manager to stay, and not sacking him at the earliest opportunity? Who'd have thought that sort of thing goes on!!

I can't see how any manager currently in a job at a stable club would see joining the pantomime that is Hearts as a good career move.

Mark McGhee

by eddiegrundy » 27 May 2008 19:48

Has just turned down the Hearts job to stay with Motherwell. Interesting that he has made a different decision to the one he made at Reading all those years ago. Perhaps he is at long last learning something about loyalty. "It smacked of what I did earlier in my mnaagement career." I don't buy all that melodramatic stuff about him being the last passenger about to board the plane, then changing his mind. Presumably he only had hand luggage otherwise his bags would have ended up in Vilnius.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/m/motherwell/7420398.stm

Motherwell manager Mark McGhee says a move to Hearts would have been "premature" after rejecting a move to Tynecastle to remain at Fir Park.

McGhee was due to fly out to Vilnus on Monday for signing talks with Hearts majority shareholder Vladimir Romanov.

But he changed his mind, adding: "It smacked of what I did earlier in my managerial career. When a bigger job came up, I went."

Hearts said their search for a new manager would continue.

McGhee, who spent 15 years in management in England, took over at Fir Park at the start of the season.

The former Aberdeen and Celtic striker revealed he had a change of heart at the airport and realised he wanted to remain at Fir Park.

"I was at the door of the plane and would have been the last passenger on board, but I turned round and said 'I can't do this'.
"We're in Europe and I always wanted that on my C.V. It's certainly not about money either.

"If it had been a financial decision I'd be on my way to Vilnus right now.

"Hearts was a bigger job, but I would never say it was a better job."

McGhee said the prospect of becoming Hearts manager was a fantastic opportunity, but he added: "I have to stick it out at Motherwell a little bit longer."

Motherwell said they were delighted McGhee would remain at the club to spearhead their Uefa Cup campaign next season.

"The club are delighted that it has successfully concluded negotiations with Mark," said a statement on the club website.

"He remains as manager and we are looking forward to next season."

Hearts said in a statement on the club website: "Hearts today confirmed that Mark McGhee will not be interviewed for the vacant managerial position at Tynecastle.

"The club continues its search for a new manager who can meet the aims of the board in delivering on-field success for Hearts."

In his first campaign, McGhee received plaudits for his team's performances as he steered the club to third spot in the Scottish Premier League.

McGhee was also interviewed for the vacant Scotland manager's position in January.

However, he stipulated he wanted to remain at Fir Park until the summer, following the death of skipper Phil O'Donnell.

Fair play to the lad.

Admitting he did wrong.

Good luck to him.

I wouldn't be fukking surprised if he does go. He managed to resist the call of Scotland, will he resist the lure of Hearts? He's disloyal to any club, I'd hope Hearts will realise what a w@nker McGhee is and not go for him.

That would be the same Mark McGhee that moved us on a stage? Spacey, you're a plastic I'm afraid. You're entirely oblivious of our real history. History, that meant we were stuck in Division 4 for most of our life. Sorry, I realise, that it might not equate with your exceedingly blinkered, narrow minded, view of the club. but Mark McGhee was the catalyst for where we are now.

Yeah, he left, Yeah he said he was staying. Fckuing get over it. McGhee>Madejski

I join in the pantomime booing of Magoo whenever he visits us, but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate what he did for us. He most definitely moved us on and was the first stone to the building that we are STILL building towards. We're almost there, and I thank him for his time with us and what he did. Sure, he left in a really unpleasant way which left a bad taste in the mouth, but I've forgiven him for that. I'll still boo him whenever he comes to town though as it is such fun.

Mark McGhee - Nice to see he's learnt his lesson

by Super Kevin Bremner! » 29 May 2008 20:06

McGhee said: “I felt a move to Hearts would have been premature for me.

“It smacked a bit of what I did earlier in my managerial career. When a bigger job came up, I went. “Hearts was a bigger job but make no mistake I would never say it was a better job.

“I couldn’t allow myself to go this time because I have to give a little more back.

“As much as Hearts was a fantastic opportunity I have to stick it out at Motherwell a bit longer.

“I was at the door of the plane and would have been the last passenger on board. But I turned round and said, ‘I can’t do this.’

“We are in Europe and I have always wanted that on my CV. I want to have that experience.

“I’ve a fantastic little team at Motherewell.

“Even on the last night of the season when we won at Hibs the performance excited me.

“I just found it impossible to draw myself away from that.”

Gotta be talking about Reading here. Nice for his feelings to manifest themselves at last. Well over it now but was soooo gutted when he walked.

It's probably the European football that swung his decision, not his love of Motherwell.

Not just the attraction of European football althuogh he did remarkably well to get a small club to qualify. He earned a lot of respect up here by the way he led the club through the difficult period after their captain died on the pitch. That must have strengthened his ties with the club and its supporters. Few, if any, in Scottish football could have acted with such surefooted dignity.

Wouldn't surprise me to read tomorrow that he's changed his mind.

Stuck in Division 3
We only started playing in Div 4 the season after RFC's Centenary season back in 1971.

So your history may need a bit of revision as well.

Know your football.

Thanks for pointing out my error. I meant to write 3/4 but I was a bit excited. Unlike you, probably, I was there during that centenary year so I don't really need reminding.

As for Platypuss.. I'm well aware of when the Division III North, South split happened, but thanks as well.

Hearts is also a poisoned chalice, so he might have been considering that too. He hasn't suddenly become Mother Teresa of Calcutta,
