A trend line shows the general tendency of the actual graph doesn't it?

It's usually a much smoother line over running the peaks and troughs... At least it is if it's the same thing as I see on our monthly/quarterly/yearly performance reports.

So the trend line should show a steady improvement in league placing over the years. Or I could be talking balls.

Barry the bird boggler Looks like next season could well be a bit dodgy if the season following our last two relegations is repeated....

That probably depends on the players who leave and come in. When we were relegated in 1988 and 1998, the teams were very different from those that came up. Our team this season is largely the same as the one that won the Championship at a canter, but with the possibility of Shorey and one or two others, this could be different.

Sticking with players that have the experience but *somehow* aged two years in the process and then you're shocked that the team isn't quite as successful?

Being older doesn't mean worse. Plenty of our players have improved significantly since that season. Which will hopefully counter balance the ones who's ageing has weakened them.

 There's a significant group of players that simply aren't gonna get much better.

Remove, replace, improve.

Coouple of 3rd power polynomial trendlines added for interest. Not sure how much they tell really, but look good!

Forbury Lion I would be interested in seeing similar graphs for the FA and League Cups seeing how far we got before being knocked out.

I had a quick go at that one, God bless soccerbase.com!

Bit on the small side!

Now that's impressive!
For those that doubt the club is on the up
Following that trend line we will be Premier League champions in 5 years at most

While I do agree with you, it is sometimes difficult to replace a good quality player if you can't find a subsitute. We'll have to wait and see what happens in the transfer market this summer. Hope it will be a positive one for us.

Thanks Strap for posting your graph, certainly looks far more interesting and contains more info. Quite interesting to see a dip in attendances every time we're relegated, so that's not a big surprise. However, it will be interesting to see by how much the average attendance will drop next year....the trendline for the position seems to be a bit level throughout the division 4 years, surely should be little dip around there?

Well yes, I agree the likes of De La, Oster, Gunnarsson, Little and Murty are all either not going to be better or have gotten older to the lessening of their usefulness. But our team was pretty young.

Murty, Little and to a lesser extent Gunnar still have enough about them to play a part, even if it is just as squad players (I include Little because we can't count on getting even half a season out of him let alone a full one) Oster and De La have gone already.

Ivar isn't that old for a centreback, Duberry offers us something at this level still and centrebacks are argueably where we are strongest. Hahnemann still has at least one season left in him.

I think Hunt, Harper, Kitson, Lita, Doyle and Long will all have grown as players, even after some of them have had horrible seasons. Then we have the likes of Bikey and Matejovski who undoubtedly improve the side. We have gaps and areas that need strengtherning. But remember Coppell has a talent for spotting players able to storm tier 2.

The problem your overlooking is that a few of those 'better' players probably won't be here. If they are they're probably going to be less fired up to succeed than last time round. I think they proved last year how they thought they'd already made it and took their eye off the ball.

Realistically I can't see that attitude being reversed by them dropping down a division.

So you don't see a:

I wanna get there! I wanna prove I'm worth being there! I'm all that *smug grin*, bollocks! I know what I can do and how high I can fly, I wanna get back up there!

scenario?

Also whilst I wouldn't be surprised to see a couple go, I don't think it will be more than that. Discounting Shorey & Sonko from that.

Nothing could be worse than Rochdale FC who have not seen promotion or relagation since 1974. 34 years straight in the bottom division (with the old re-election process). Must be about 1300 games in the same league. Now that would be really dull. Thanks for the post SpaceCruiser I found it interesting and orignal.
