Alan Partridge Simple fact is Hunt carries on playing like he has over the last 5 or 6 weeks and there is no Premiership club that would even consider buying him.

For the fee Reading would sell him for he'd be easily replaced.

A truly average footballer with ideas above his station.

Agreed, he's been just about Championship standard recently, he thinks he can take on and beat the entire opposing team. If he's looking to fit into a team amongst the second tranche of the Premiership I think we'll have him on our books for some time to come.

Why? What is the transfer fee to fans? So many people are having a go at Hunt that I can't believe it. I think he is terrific, and I make no bones about it that I want himn to stay. Not easy to replace a tackling winger.

As has been stated, I don't mind him going, and I think 5M would be very good money for him - and he will struggle in the Prem.

It's the manner in which he is prostituting himself on telly and making Reading and Coppell look like tw*ts. Good riddance.

Who wants a tackling winger?

I'd rather has one who can dribble, cross and score tbh.

andrew1957 The problem is the lack of respect to the fans. Some players forget that the fans care far more about the club than they do. Players come and go but the fans are there for good and ultimately the fans pay their wages.

No, no they don't.

Without fans professional football as we know it would not exsist.

he only said he wants to better himself, but said he was happy at reading, sidders did the same thing.

i think from the interview, where he was hinting that he liked roy hodgson as a manager, he could well be off to fulham

Whether £5 million represents good money or not is irrelevent if we don't spend it on a replacement and history would suggest we won't.

History would suggest that we build on the team ethic and that replacements don't have to cost much, if anything.

You are sooooo obsessed with spending money - in case you haven't noticed we generally find gems without spending megabucks.

It's fans that buy Sky and Setanta deals, it's to attract fans that pubs and clubs buy Sky and Setanta deals and it's to the viewers of those channels that the TV advertisers and shirt sponsors want to sell their goods and services. No fans no professional footie, simple as.

As someone who still finds it difficult to believe how far we've come in the last 10 years, compared to the previous 30 years that I've followed RFC, I find it difficult to understand what the hell your problem with the Madejski/Coppell axis.

It's football watchers that buy Sky and Setanta, not a specific club's supporters. No watchers, no football, but not fans. Most watch the games that are on, but only once in a while care which team wins.

Blimey, now we're getting into some semantics!

So most people who pay money to Sky and Setanta to watch footie cannot be considered "fans", but only "watchers". Surely they buy those channels because they enjoy watching football which, unless they're some strange kind of sadists, would make them "football fans". If they "once in a while care which team wins" then, even if they are simple glory hunters, the desire to see a specific team win, under those circumstances, would tend to define them as "supporters" of that club.

Deadlock
londinium Surely every player should aspire to go to a bigger and better club.

Or should they just plod along at what they beleive to be their level?

I'm reminded of a Fans' Forum when Pardew was still manager. The question of loyalty came up (can't remember in what context) and Pardew said that every player at the club wanted to play for Manchester United, he wanted to manage them[1], and Marcus (who was also there) wanted to play in goal for them.

Boomer than nodded and said "£100,000 a week" and grinned like a Cheshire cat.

There are very very few players who actually play for the club they support. In general they are not fans, they are professionals, and like nearly all professionals they will try to make the best career for themselves that they can. That means playing to the best of their ability for their current employers, while hoping to get headhunted by someone who will pay more.

[1] Given that I was there when he said it, I really shouldn't have been so surprised that he oxf*rd off to West Ham at the first opportunity.

I think Eamon Dunphy in "more than a job" said something about how he and the other players felt about loyalty.
They felt loyalty and comradeship with eachother and to the manager but not to the club.
That is the transient nature of a footballers career. more so in the 70's/80's when you weren't earning a lifetimes worth of salary in a season though!

Doyle's attitude compared to others (S.HUNT)

by loyalroyal4life » 23 Dec 2008 14:14

The guy just gets better and better with his comments, no wonder he is having such a sublime season thus far!!

Doyle wants to see back of window
Reading striker keen to focus on promotion push

Kevin Doyle is keen to see the back of the transfer window to enable Reading to concentrate on their promotion push.

The Royals striker, who recently signed a new three-year contract at the Madejski Stadium, is the top scorer in the Championship having bagged his 16th of the season in Saturday's 3-1 win over promotion rivals Birmingham.

Doyle has attracted interest from a number of clubs in the Premier League, but the Republic of Ireland international is purely focused on helping Steve Coppell's men get back into the top flight.

Having suffered the heartbreak of relegation last term, Doyle is enjoying the change of atmosphere in the dressing room and hopes Coppell will be able to keep all his key men on board.

Future
He told reporters: "At least I'm not getting 101 questions about my future now, and that was the reason our director of football, Nicky Hammond, came to me.

"Last year we seemed to struggle January and only got going after the transfer window. Hopefully, we can have a settled month and concentrate. The sooner the window is out of the way, the better.

"We need to forget about everything else. It's a great feeling to be challenging for a league as opposed to last season when we were struggling against relegation.

"Everyone seems happier and the team spirit is definitely better."

i can't recall that he did, maybe he did before he signed the contract extension but nevertheless his attitude speaks wonders about what he is about. His mentality is a key to the way he has performed this season.

“You hear so many different things for three months. Will I stay at Reading? I don’t know. It’s difficult to predict, but stranger things have happened.”

“I presume I'll stay because there's not long to go until the window closes.”

Doyle continued: “I’ll be glad when the window shuts because the whole thing is mentally tiring.”

and

"It's just speculation with me and Chelsea at the moment but it's good for the ego," Doyle told the Daily Star.

"If one of the top four want to sign me I would want to go for it.

"When I left Cork City to come to Reading people said I would never play but if you listen to comments like that you never progress.

"You don't just want to sit there on the bench but you have to give it a go and then a year down the line you may go back.

"But you have to take the opportunity if it comes, otherwise you will never know how far you can go."

Not to quite the extent of Hunt, but Doyle has expressed his desire to further himself in the same way as Hunt has.
