westendgirl Listening to the 5Live Monday night club last night it was said that the January window does tend to lead to panic buys unlike the summer window. So do we need to panic?

Old Biscuitman There is no necessary truth in the statement that because our competitors sign new players we effectively go backwards. It depends on relative needs and the identity of the new pl;ayers. In fact I suspect Brum's signing of Bowyer represents an effective step forwards for us.

In a tight race, we do need to pay attention to what others are doing. Last January, Fulham and Bolton were in more desperate straights than we were and when they bought it looked like desperation (I almost certainly said so at the time). But they bought well and the rest is history. The right players could transform Birmingham's season, as they already have a lot of talent at the club but don't seem to be making the most of it.

Fulham bought so well that it was the return from injury of their two best players that kept them up.
