There willbe dancing on the streets of Didcot and no more Hammond slagging ever if he pulled the deal off. Try and announce it whilst pissing ourselves laughing on Sky Sports News.

Portsmouth are going to get relegated.

Thought it was odd there was no thread! Checked in that one but saw first couple of posts and thought nothing of it! Sorry.

Any how many strikers would that leave Portsmouth with? I really think this one is well off the mark, though I wouldn't mind being proved wrong.

Even if Pompey did want to get rid of him, could he be convinced to come to us? He would probably still fancy his chances of getting a starting place in the Pompey side, Crouch and Defoe having been moved on.

I think the way the argument runs is that Crouch and Defoe were bought precisely because Pompey felt that Nugent wasn't giving them what they needed. They are already being linked with strikers like Nikola Kalinic - as replacement for Crouch - and Mark Viduka.

Having said that, I'd be amazed if we did get Nugent.

I love this quote
Some Pompey Fan Stephen Hunt is a player that is being 'linked' with Pompey, and he is most certainly a player that I would be delighted to see us sign,

POTD. (That's Post, not Pikey, btw.)

I'd swap Hunt for a bar of Dairy Milk, let alone Nugent. I shall be laughing until Christmas if this comes off.

Nugent would be an excellent addition, better than Smith by far, and the kind of proven player that would allow us to then use Hunt, Long and Church more sensibly than hoping they can carry the weight of the attack between them

Getting both targets and having Nugent up tops and Smith out on the right would be even better

As Paul Hart has said he wants to bring in "at least 5 or 6" players, I doubt they will be short of strikers for long.

Nugent at his best is a great, great player, but is he crocked or does he have a training/other problem
because he has never cut it since leaving Preston and nobody seems to want him.

He would probably be on VG wages if he cost 6 million and is an England player

The same wages as SHunt? Or more?

Wasn't the main reason to move SHunt on to reduce the wage bill?

Any other season and yes, but with the likes of Hull, Stoke, Wolves, Burnley and even Bolton, it looks like they could have enough to get by on.

It looks like they might not have enough to actually field a side !

Is it now 14 outfield players they have ?

Plus 3 keepers, meaning they don't have the bare 18 in a Premiership squad !

How that makes them less likely to go down than any of the teams mentioned I can;t quite see....

Pompey have had the likes of Defoe, Crouch, Baros, Benjani and to a lesser extent Kanu and Utaka to choose from in Nugents time down there

Thats some pretty stiff competition when your just trying to settle into a new club and play at a higher level at the same time. I dont think it was the best move for him to be honest

As for the wages. He would probably be a decent wedge, but the main reason for getting rid of Hunt isnt his wages, its the fact he doesnt want to be hear anymore. Not sure if we would stretch to offer Nugent enough to make the switch, but it might be a case of Pompey picking up some of his wages in order to do the business they want

The News Hunt has a £5m release clause in his contract, but Reading would be willing to do business for £3.5m

There is even the possibility of a swap deal, with Royals director of football Nicky Hammond attending Pompey's pre-season friendlies at the Hawks and Basingstoke.

So Mark Wilson or Nugent?

If can swing both...do it. If I had to choose one, I guess Nugent.

Nugent has been Pompey's equivilent of Lita; a player who might think he deserved to be higher up the billing then he is (or deserves to be) and who got pushed further down the pecking order by newer arrivals.

The expectation of a move to Everton seemed to hang over him from the day he left Preston, and that may also have had an effect on his form, and now having spent the best part of 3 seasons on the bench, him and his agent might see a drop down to the Championship in an effort to revive his career, especially to a club where he would be considered the #1 striker. Just don't expect him to be eligible for a testimonial!!

As for wages, these things are all about VALUE and not about cost. In other words, if SHunt is on £25K per week, and Nugent £30K, which one would represent better value for RFC at this moment in time?

If this were to happen, I think everyone would win - we get a striker of quality who SHOULD have the hunger and desire to prove that he is still worthy of a Premiership squad, whilst getting rid of a player who, whilst on his day to produce the goods, has made it clear for the best part of 12 months that he no longer wants to play for us.

Great deal if it happens.

I would rather punch myself in the face than see Nugent in a Reading shirt.
