Evening Post :

Reading FC make £1.2million bid for Watford FC's Tommy Smith
By Jonny Fordham
August 16, 2009

Reading have made an improved offer for Watford striker Tommy Smith as Brendan Rodgers closes in on his top transfer target.

The Post can reveal Royals have tabled a bid of around £1.2million for the 29-year-old double Hor-nets player-of-the-season who is keen to link up with former manager Rodgers at Madjeski Stadium.

As exclusively reported in the Post in June Smith is top of the Northern Irishman’s shopping list and Watford chairman Jimmy Russo has admitted the club would sell if the right offer came in.

The Hertfordshire club have confirmed they received a bid for their prized asset and are consider-ing it, but refused to confirm it is from Reading.

Ironically, Newcastle United who beat Reading 3-0 on Saturday have also enquired about the for-ward, but Smith would prefer to remain in the south.

The former Sunderland and Derby player who is out of contract this summer turned down a move to Sheffield United after Watford had a £1.8m bid accepted last month.

Russo has insisted he will not let Smith leave unless a club matches their valuation so Royals may still need to up the cash before landing their man.

Reading have previously had a bid of £750,000 rejected by Watford and Royals are also believed to be monitoring the situation of midfielder Jobi McAnuff who is another fans' favourite at Vicarage

(.)Boobies(.) From what I hear, we have increased our initial offer and that was some weeks back. I don't know who Get Reading's sources are, but saying we haven't gone back with an improved offer is complete nonsense. We have apparently increased to £1.2m upfront and a little more if we won promotion, thought to be around another £250k. This was dismissed out of hand by the ever awkward Mr Russo. I'm hearing now that we have put our foot down and said take it or leave it, and we'll wait until January when Smith's value should decrease even further with 6 months left on his contract at that point. Watford are in no rush to sell with the imminent departure of Tamas Priskin, apparently to Ipswich for seven figures.

As I said on August 3rd. The Evening Post is shockingly slow for 'news'. The £1.2m was offered, refused and we held our ground but the offer remained on the table. Negotiations have continued, but this news paper is very out of touch with the football club.

Ideal Is Tommy Smith really what we need anyway?
We already have a bunch of smallish strikers. What we need is a great big strong guy to offer a physical presence, something different to all the other ones we already have.

I think Smith is just what we need in terms of linking midfield to attack. And for a "physical presence, something different to all the other ones we already have."

As Tommy Smith isn't really a striker your point is irrelevant. He plays in midfield.

He's a good finisher, but to suggest he'll offer any sort of muscle is pretty daft.

Unless I'm being whooooshed. :?

Wolves in for Smith

by Sir Dodger Royal » 16 Aug 2009 21:50

According to SDRs media chums Wolves are about to bid £1.8million for Smith to ease their striker injury list.

Mick McCarthy is also keen as Smith is versatile and can play in a number of positions.

Emmm makes it unlikely that Russo will accept £1.2million from RFC.

Although Wolverhampton is not up North the West Midlands is not exactly on Smith's doorstep.

Will the Madman match their bid?

That is the Question.
