Youngsters so far my opinion:

Pearce - reminds me a lot of Adie Williams, good when the ball is in the air in front of him less so down the sides, and I still have a nagging feeling that he hasn't really improved since he was on loan at Southampton, watches the ball too much for me at the moment - hopefully with time he will improve on positioning.

Karacan - like him a lot, bags of energy and he is improving with game time, when he first started he looked at bit slight but now looks much more assured and I think in a couple of years he will be where Harper and sidwell were for us before a key midfield player.

Henry - a big enigma for me, he has got talent but I'm not sure he has the application. Last season for me he didn't have the legs for championship football and has picked up Kebe's habits regarding trying to beat the man (taking his eye off the ball). Rodgers doesn't look like playing wingers any time soon so he will have to adjust to the wide diamond role or as one of the three forwards.

Sigurdsson - really like him since the first time I saw him played very comfortable on the ball. Wouldn't like to see him flogged to death this season as I think he needs to bulk up at bit and get a little more stamina to make a few more telling runs.

Robson Kanu - has looked a little nervous and probably needs a few games from the bench rather than starting but he has the pace and skill (if he can stay free of injuries) to be a really good player.

Church - nice movement and good technique but doesn't strike me as a goal scorer more a goal maker, looks too lightweight for championship football at the moment and I would give him another loan at division one level.

Davies - like his confidence and willingness to try things and shoot!! Like Sigurdsson I wouldn't want to see him over used as I think he needs careful management to maintain championship pace.

Hamer - impressed with him and i think he will keep Federici on his toes.

Kelly - has looked nervous in his few games but has promise.

Don't think any of others will be playing at championship level this year- Bignall needs another loan. Like the little bit I've seen of Baggie.

Who wiill step up to the mark in the Championship ?

by howser » 30 Aug 2009 13:06

Right folks a month and 5 matchesinto the season, and its fair to say we have given the young lads a chance to show what they can do, living up here as i do here in the back of beyond, and with only tv highlights to watch, hadr to make a judgement so who do you guys think is going to cut it, out of the younger brigade, at this level ?

I think all those who have played so far this season could cut it at this level, Karacan and Sigurdsson will both be capable of playing in the premiership

Henry should be capable of a higher level, but he has what seems to be a confidence or attitude problem, he doesn't seem to have the same energy as is peers.

Pearce, Karacan and Sigurdsson are easily good enough for this level.

Robson-Kanu and Davies should probably be good enough, just need more experience.

Haven't seen much of Hamer but he looks like a very good keeper from what I have seen.

Question marks against Church, Henry and Bignall.

Early days yet though.

Hugely impressed with Sigurdsson (sp?)
Karacan too, as I was last season.
HRK looks good, can take his man on and beat him, but the final ball is poor - as quoted by Swindon fans last season.
Bignall too impressed, more so than Church thus far, albeit that was against less opposition in the FLC.

Not sure about Pearce.. made far to many mistakes for my liking... needs an 'Ivar ' figure next to him I think.

not convinced by Pearce atall, makes me laugh when people were willing to let Bikey go as he can be a liability, Pearce can easily match him

I remember people slagging off Doobs last season in matches where Pearce individual mistakes cost goals. Think a few people have the blinkers on with him but then why not loal lad and young I hope he makes it to

Pearce - I remain unconvinced, was brilliant against Forest, but hasn't sounded nearly as good since.
Kraken - I like him, I think he'll be fine at this level, but I don't think he's the defensive player, more one of the box to boxers
The Sig - Only seen bits and pieces in highlights but he looks good enough for this level from what I've seen. Again a box to boxer, but leaning more towards the creative passing role than Kraken.
Davies - Again think he'll be good enough. I actually think he's got more potential than Kraken, but is less polished at this point. He'll come on a lot this season and I think he may be one for the Prem if he can get a bit less sloppy. Another Box to Boxer.
HRK - Looks to me to have a most of Kebe's strengths but few of his weaknesses, a long way from the finished article possibly one for the Prem, If he plays a good amount this season definitely a big player for next year.
Henry - undeniably talented, seems to be being retrained for a creative role in the middle, question marks over his mental qualities. Good enough talent wise for this level, not sure he'll get to prove it though.
Kelly - Good league 1 right back. Needs some first team experience, send him out on loan.
Hamer - Not seen nearly enough of him, but sounds promising, could be in for a long and frustrating season.
Church - good, exciting player, but I think he's a league 1 striker. Just doesn't have that extra something that means he can make it big IMO. Not quite a winger and I don't think he'll score enough to be a proper striker at this level

From what I've seen in pre-season and 5 of our first 7 games I think Karacan and Sigurdsson look the most talented. I honestly believe that we would have been weaker yesterday if Harper and Matejovsky had played instead of them. Pearce is as good as Karacan and Sigurdsson but unfortunately at the moment he still has a tendency to make mistakes that lead to goals. Robson-Kanu and Scott Davies look like decent Championship squad players and may get better. I didn't see the Barnsley cup game so I can't comment on Kelly and I don't think you can judge Hamer or Bignall on the Burton game. I think the one let down is Henry. It's striking that Antonio was ahead of him yesterday. He has the talent but Coppel was known to dislike him and it seems that he's similarly failed to impress Rodgers.

My take on the pups thus far:
Pearce: Not convinced. I think that he will come good but not without at least one or two lapses per game. Whichever two CBs we play, one must have pace and one must have composure.
Karacan: More than good enough at this level. A future captain perhaps.
The Sig: Very impressed with the two games I have seen him play and looks far more assured than Scott Davies.
Davies: Two years at the shite have been good for him. However, I think the step from Div 4 to Div 2 is too big. A year on loan somewhere like Norwich or Charlton would do him good. Then he can push for a regular starting place.
HRK: Needs to be nurtured and brought on gradually and carefully. I think we have a star in the making.
Henry: Not convinced that he will ever be a regular starter.
Kelly: TBF, I have not seen enough of him to make a fair judgement.
Hamer: Like what I have seen so far. Calm and assured and I think if Fed keeps throwing them in then Ben should get a chance sooner rather than later.
Church: Needs another year on loan pref at somewhere like Charlton or Norwich.

And that, in a nutshell, is our problem - as soon as we get a player who's a little bit handy, we sell them on for big bucks.

+1 also... however where's the optimism?!... in a few years with Gylfi developing we'll break into the Big 4 and then he may just want to stay... :P

What a load of rubbish - we kept Doyle for a year when we went down and chose to sell the rest. We don't HAVE to sell anyone.
