The team didn't need a manager against Liverpool, as they all raised their games. We should judge McDermott on league results and after Plymouth away did you think he know "shit loads about football" ?

Lets see what happens Saturday, but last nights result may actually be a bad thing ,as McDermott may get the job for the wrong reasons.

McD is certainly more in the SSC mould than the BR one - which is a good thing.

He was genuinely pleased and excited for the players and the fans last night - his interviews were controlled and not all about him and full of cliches.

The players certainly played out of their skins yesterday, although Liverpool were rubbish, but that's not taking away from the team, particularly Gunnar who played an absoloute blinder. I think McD could get the best out of this bunch of players and I hope he does. I'd be quite happy to see him installed as manager, if he wants it, by Easter. There is no-one else out there who jumps out as being the right manager for this club at the present time and too much change is only detrimental to the players - so we need to keep with what we've got at the moment imo.

Well done Brian and well done RFC for a sweet victory last night - here's hoping they can take all they learned last night into the league games.

Obviously not wise to rush into big decisions on a wave of emotion.

Nevertheless, I think McD got everything pretty much spot on last night: the team selection, the substitutions (which meant we changed shape a couple of times, and in the right way), and his overall demeanour in interviews and obvious pleasure for the players. Made Benitez look a berk.

I made this comparison too. He's learned a lot under SSC I think. I know someone who knows BM and he says he's a genuinely nice bloke - and that does seem to come across.

I say why not? I would probably give him have a couple more championship games before confirming, just in case we get thumped 5-0 in each . But if we look solid, if we looking like we're making steady improvement, I think it would be unfair not to offer it to him (at least for the rest of the season). Tommy Burns RIP proves big managers don't always mean big results.

Coppell's team were in your face, high tempo, get the ball wide sides. Last night was back to those days. It doesn't have be 'we made 560 passes' to be entertaining, but nor is it kick and rush. Work hard, win the ball back, get it wide. That's what these players are used to and do well.

I think with McDermott, the jobs his anyway but even so with Fergie jnr and Irvine back in work, who is out there that is worth taking and chancing possibly upsetting what is a happy camp now? For me, no one. Not within Reading's budget anyway.

Agreed! other candidates are in no better position than BM is right now, albeit I'd swap a cup run for six points in the league thank you very much!

For me the most significant thing is the players apparent willingness to punch above their collective weight for the man in charge, I didn't see much of that with BR

Being fit, strong, committed and organised must come before experimentation in the real world.

Well done BM and all concerned, keep up the good work because you will be on a hiding to nothing after going through extra time with Luckypool and then having THE form team of the division to deal with on Saturday!

I think the time has come for the club to make an official statement of the position manager to remove any uncertainly.

If McD has it until the end of the season then tell everyone, if they are undecided then tell everyone, if they are looking for someone else then tell everyone, but say something through official channels.

Personally I would be very happy if they announced he has signed a 3 and half year deal.

It was refreshing to see a sensible interview last night without all the rubbish that Brendan use to come out with, but lets not forget this was the same team which went to Plymouth and got hammered. I'm not sure that he is the right guy for the job in the long term, but I certainly think that he has already been given the nod till the end of the season anyhow given that both Ferguson and Irvine went to other clubs when they were meant to be on the list for the original job.

The important thing is that if the club feel he is right then they need to back him, Griffin and Thorvaldsson have come in but is that going to be enough ? They must be some money in the pot now given two tv matches and another FA cup game, so give the guy money and let him prove he can do enough to build a good team and consolidate for next season.

Nice observation and idea BTBB! if BM lacks anything at this time it's a particular 'profile' I like him letting the football do the talking as it were, but he deserves recognition for his efforts.

January saw the start of our FA Trophy run, starting with Welling United, from whom we salvaged a draw at Park View Road after having Paul Wilkerson dismissed minutes into the second half. Stand-in goalkeeper Owusu kept the score at 1-1, before we finished them off in the replay, 2-1. Another nice win at Telford United, 1-0 thanks to Bolt again was followed by an unsurprising 0-1 at League leaders Halifax Town. A comical distraction came in the 2-6 Berks & Bucks defeat at Reading's Elm Park before we returned to Halifax Town in the FA Trophy, Mark West equalising in the dying minutes to secure the replay, which we somewhat comfortably won 2-0.

I loved the understated clenched fist when Sig's pen went in. Well done Brian; you have got players playing well in the preferred positions. However, I would still like to reserve judgment on him as a permanent solution until we have some league wins under our belt.
