Director of Football

by Doyler » 29 Jan 2010 11:02

This point may have been raised before and if so I apologise. We are a club who has, according to the board, needed to cut its cloth over the past few months. If that is the case, then why is a director of football still seen as a viable position at the club? The idea supposedly is take pressure off the manager, allowing him to concentrate on football matters while the director of football takes care of contract negotiations and transfer dealings. I don't see why these tasks cannot be done by the assistant manager.

Judging by the fact that Hammond drives an Aston Martin into work, his wage packet must be pretty good. If we got rid of him maybe it would free up some cash to bring in the goalscorer we desperately need.

+1 - think the wizard is bored and frustrated at the moment, due to there being no jolly hockey sticks, and hes venting his frustration on all :)

Bi if we got rid of squeaky, who would peel Mr Mad's grapes and feed them him?

As he drives an Aston Marton, I am reminded of the toy boys Arab Sheikhs used to retain whilst I was working in the Middle East some years ago. They were presented with expensive "gifts" in return for "services unknown", and after a few months would never be seen again. We all took it for "the Arab way of doing things", but perhaps it is more the "millionaires' way of doing things".

Perhaps it's squeaky's "boyish looks" that are the reason he retains hios "position"?

(Trying to find a wind-up emoticon but can't, so yes, this is tongue in cheek - if you'll pardon the expression!)

Doyler, the assistant manager is more wrapped up in the football side of things and putting on training sessions than the manager is (in a lot of cases at least). He really wouldn't be the right person to be making high level budget decisions whilst negotiating contracts.

There may be an argument that the CEO or another Director could take that part of the DoFs job off his hands, but the DoF does more than just sit around waiting for a contract to negotiate!

Like a lot of organisations perhaps the staffing costs need to be looked at and reductions made at that level, but I doubt the savings would have a significant impact on the wage bill. I'd guess that Hammond is on something like £100-150k a year, and for that he manages all the football personel within the club.

Should Hammond still be in the job might be another question, but personally I get the impression he isn't that responsible for the key decisions that people seem to be blaming him for.

The assistant manager is just as busy as the manager acting as chief coach.

We have a DoF which is widely recognised as an excellently defined role, because neither Howe or Madejski have the time or knowledge to link with the manager as our DoF does and because we would rather the manager spent his time managing, not phoning round clubs, agents and players and trying to work out contracts.

Never fully understood DoF - useful in the days of Madman takin RFC seriously when we actually tried to better the club (Doyle, Convey etc) but now that we're relying on academy players and loanees it's pointless.

As for freeing up money I'm not sure lack of money has ever been the problem!

This is a fair thread, ruined again by this clueless poster. Can we bring this to a Mod's attention ? I think I speak for all, when I say, we'll all getting a bit fed up with this mindless abuse.

So we haven't made 10 signings this season, broken our non Premier League season spending record, released or sold lots of players and contracts have stopped being negotiated.

If anything DoF will have been as busy as ever this season.

But don't let any of that logic get in the way of your blinkered view point will you.
