In terms of distance there is little betwwen the 3 clubs. You would think there would be a rivalry with Swindon as we were both founder members of div 3 south in 1920 and have plyed each other nearly a 100 times in league football. Oxford only joined the league 1963, and left it 2 years ago.

In the Wallingford Quadrangle of Hate, I would put Swindon at number two.

Besides which, I would happily kick the cunt off every single supporter of every single club based along the M4, but then maybe I'm old fashioned.

Swindon and Reading were mutual rivals until the early 60's. Now it's Oxford and Swindon as mutual rivals, even with the former non league. Neither like us, of course.

The only mutual rivals since then is Aldershot. Sad but true.

I think QPR and Watford are (geographically) closer than Swindon.

"Derby" is a loose concept of which geographical proximity is just one factor. Another is obviously relative league position. Certainly in my early days as a fan, Swindon always felt like a derby although they and we hate Oxford far more than we hate each other. These days, my son treats Bristol City as a derby, and City seem to treat Cardiff as almost as much as a derby as they would Rovers.

Anyway, would love to see Swindon come up - I have mates who support them and it's a nice easy away trip (not to mention three points). If Bristol Rovers came up via the playoffs (unlikely) that would also be good for similar reasons.

Messiah Not really a derby as such. They care little about us to be honest. Oxford is their derby, and I think most of us think of Oxford as more of a derby than Swindon.

Not fussed. Hope they come up though, as it's an easy 30 mile trip up the M4.

Is your brain full of sandwich bags?

We've played Swindon more than we have played Oxford and Swindon have played Oxford.

I've looked up soccerbase, we've played Swindon 95 times. Unfortunately, soccerbase doesn't do non-league teams (LOL @ Oxford) for head-to-head searches.

Are "derby" games based on how many times you've played a team then? :?

I can't believe a seasoned football supporter of God knows how many years, hasn't a clue what makes a derby, a derby. :|

In fact mass misuse of the terms 'rivals' and 'derby'.

Sheff Utd have been 'rivals' for several seasons but playing them is not a 'derby'.

Swindon haven't been 'rivals' for many years, but it's a 'derby' game.

Wycombe are our closest league team but games against them have not been between 'rivals' and never felt like a 'derby'

I have no idea what does and doesn;t count !!

Swindon fans I know all say their main derby is with Bristol City.

Who in turn, really don't care about swindon as they hate rovers and cardiff more.

Swindon see themselves as west country, we are more a London club IMO.

A derby is when two teams from a similar area play each other, is it not?..........I dont understand Spaceys comment on how many times we've played a team counts as a derby :? As usual he posts something, gets it wrong and fails to back it up.

Teams from places not especially close play in Derby games (Norwich / Ipswich, Swansea / Cardiff, Liverpool / Man Utd)

Traditionally derbies were between teams from the same town/ city but pretty much anything goes now.

I would say our "derby" games (of league teams) would be
Swindon
Wycombe
Aldershot

Of them none are really our "rivals" unless you class Aldershot as the same Aldershot that went out of business in 92?!

It is definitely the 'same' Aldershot.
Like leicester are the same Leicester and Chelsea are the same Chelsea.

Can;t recall when Aldershot we actually a 'rival' - as in competing for something alongside us.

The problem with us is that in recent years we've been far more successful than anyone around us to have a decent rival.

If we were competing with swindon right now in division two for an automatic there would be a lot of animosity and a chance to reignite old flames ( that were once there), same with oxford, wycombe and aldershot. As it stands we are twice the size of all those, recently spent time in the prem and due a mid table finish in the championship once again miles above them.

The problem here is most people don't use the word 'local' any more. These are local derby's. The obvious local derby's are Oxford, Swindon and Aldershot. But as some have said, these guys are in some cases 30 something miles away, so the likes of Watford & Brentford should be inclusive in terms of a 'local derby'.

If you want to talk about where the rivalry comes in, then of course we talk about our 'local' derby's being Oxford, Swindon and Aldershot.

That's how I see it anyway.

Never knew Chelsea and Leicester dissolved......when did that happen?

They are a rival in the fact their old school supporters hate us and vise versa.

went to Aldershot vs Reading a few years back and it was a tasty atmosphere, bricks and objects thrown by many. Club officials obviously didnt realise it was a derby
