McDermott's Post Wolves Interview on Sky

by Schards#2 » 30 Jul 2010 08:59

Not seen this mentioned elsewhere so apologies if it has but did anyone see McDermott's Sky interview shown after they showed the goals on Sky Sports News on Wednesday?

Talked about hoping he could keep most of his best players before the transfer window closes. Possibly i'm being paranoid but by using the word 'most' rather than 'all' it seemed he was pretty sure at least one of our better players would be on his way.

Having sold a lot of our cover players, I don't think this squad could withstand losing on or two first choices and remain competitive.

Think you'll probably looking too deeply at this but of course if a bid that is too good to turn down comes in, we may well end up seeing someone leave.

What was the actual question?

what was his exact answer?

In what context was the question asked?

From my shaky memory, he was asked about the game and then asked if he was confident about the coming season to which he responded as above. They then asked something like "do you think you may lose any players". and he said something like "there is no team in the championship that can see off a bid if a premiership club targets a player"

So basically he was just stating the obvious then?

In answer to the last question, (which is not referred to in the original post), yes.

Well I'm expecting Feds and McAnuff to be off. Both would command seven figure sums and both positions have adequate cover with Academy grads.

Mr Mad is never going to turn away say £2M for Feds and £1.5M for McAnuff, especially as their combined cost was, what, 300k?

OK, this may well weaken a Prem bid, but that's not an issue for Mr Mad as we all know he doesn't want the expense of the PL.

In addition, he can sweeten the fans by giving 500k to McD to secure Zurab, and the other £3M can be lost in the financial black hole that has formed within RFC.

Not rocket science.

But if he wanted to make money he could go for promotion but then not fund any wage increases for players!
5 years of prem tv money/parachute payments totalling over 100m. his mistake last time was to try and keep our players by paying out all that money in wages.

Losing McAnuff would adversely affect our chances. However, losing Feds- great as he is, would be not massive loss given our other keepers. Its a gamble that they'll step up, but at least one of the three will I'm sure.

I didn't see the interview, so can't really comment on whether it's worrying or not, but it sounds like it's just McD's turn of phrase that's raised the question.

All our players are available at a price, and I think those prices now are probably less than they would've been at any other point in the last 5 years because of the current climate. Having said that I don't think we're in too much danger of losing our key players, largely because I don't think we've got that many who would be that attractive to other clubs higher up the food chain.

Sigurdsson is the obvious one, but I think he'll be here until at least Christmas whilst propsective buyers check he isn't a flash in the pan. McAnuff might be one that goes, and although I rate him highly I think he's replacable if McD gets a decent amount back into the kitty.

The rest, Mills aside perhaps, I wouldn't be too bothered about because I think we'd replace them easily enough.

Just like every club in every division Reading will be aiming to keep their best players this summer, however just like every club if an offer too good to be true appears then any player is at risk of leaving.

i.e. every player at every club has their price.

The club shop were asked not to use Federici in the promotional pictures for the new kit, as the club expected him to be sold. Hopefully that will be the only first choice player on his way out, but I've got a feeling Jobi is off to QPR.

He wasn't even back at the club was he? He was given an extended break due to his world cup commitments....

When all the pictures for the new kit where done he was on World Cup duty so would never of been involved in the pictures anyway so I smell bull. As far as the extended break goes he was not taken on the tour but did come straight back and was training while the others where away.

But the website has a piece about Federici making a swift return to Slovenia with the Oz national team after spending 10 days on tour there with Reading. Surely some mistake.......

BTW - is it me or are the message times about 20 minutes too fast?

When were the pictures taken then?

As for not touring, he was in the list of those going because I remember the dicussion about taking 4 keepers. I guess they may have just forgotten to pick him up...although he does appear in the tour photo's so I think you've probably made it up.

The only bit I'd respond to there is that we have allegedly turned down a £1.5m bid already according to some and apparently set the price tag at £2m.

Personally I think any worry about losing important players is overstated. But then again every player has their price.

End of August isn't it?

It was definitely a couple of weeks or more into the season last year...

I smell bull****, not a single mention of this in the last 3 days, despite the fact he supposedly picked up the injury in the Wolves game.
